I love the game. Have loved it since I was a kid. The Mitchell Report will be released tomorrow, naming 80 current and former players. I believe this will have a devastating on our game. I hope the sport survives this
baseball has historically been the most morally corrupt sport in america. but since it is a sport that has historically been dominated by white men, it survives with much less criticism than it deserves.
Maybe I'm in the minority, maybe I'm not, but personally I really don't care about this whole steroids thing and I hardly thing it'll destroy baseball. I honestly sorta feel the issue has become hugely overblown. People will always find ways to bend the rules or flat out cheat, whether it's pine tar, scuffing the ball, vase line, spit, stealing signs and yes steroids. The report needs to come out already so the game can move forward finally...hopefully get some closure on this chapter.
I thought baseball died a long time ago.. or maybe it just seems that way because of how unbelievably boring it is.
This Mitchell Report isn't going to change how I look at baseball. I already know big leaguers juiced up during the steroid era and the only name that would shock me if I saw on there is Craig Biggio. Any other big leaguer and I wouldn't be surprised to find out that they were using steroids.
Wait!!! We're gonna learn today that pro athletes, in this case baseball players, used steroids and other performance-enhancing drugs?? Seriously?? What a shocker!!! Let me catch my breath!!! This report is a joke. A mention in this report is nothing but someone else tying a name to steroids....not any particular player testing positive nor any particular player admitting to steroid use. Without a positive test, there will be no suspension. This report is without teeth. In the end, it will be interesting for a short period of time regarding names in each city....and it may have Hall of Fame implications for a player....it may. But ultimately it tells us nothing more significantly than we already knew. It just colors in the lines on some details. Baseball's revenues are at NFL revenue levels. It's beyond healthy. Ballparks are packed. The owners are making money big time. Baseball isn't going anywhere.
What they should do is spice up baseball a bit. Add some cheerleaders, and have a lion run out on the field at random. Maybe throw him at the pitcher or at an outfielder about to catch a fly. Or throw craploads of baseballs in the air and if the outfielder catches the wrong one, its an automatic run for the other team. Sounds stupid but I would buy season tix.
