97.5 FM seems to be the frontrunner to pick up ESPN radio.

So is Houston sufficiently interested in sports to support three all-sports radio stations?

We're about to find out. ESPN Radio's decision to end its affiliation with KBME (790 AM) as of January means Houston will have a third all-sports outlet to join KBME and KILT (610 AM).

ESPN is negotiating with several station groups, according to a company spokesman, but early indications are that it will end up on an FM station, perhaps one of two owned by Cumulus Radio, KNFC (97.5 FM) or KIOL (103.7 FM), more likely the former. Cumulus officials had no comment last week on possible format changes.

ESPN Radio's decision to leave KBME apparently stemmed in part from 790's addition of Brad Davies and Carl Dukes in morning drive. KBME last week moved the start time for the show from 7 a.m. to 6 a.m., citing what program director Ken Charles said was "overwhelming listener support," which leaves only one hour of the Mike Greenberg/Mike Golic show from 5 to 6 a.m.

KBME also carries Fox Sports Radio, which also is part of the Clear Channel Communications empire, at nights and on weekends.

ESPN has made headway in Dallas-Fort Worth against KTCK, the entrenched all-sports pioneer, by moving to FM. KESN (103.7 FM) in Dallas carries the entire Mike and Mike show and the Dan Patrick Show but has local shows in late morning, afternoon drive and from 6 to 8 p.m. weekdays.

Mike and Mike, and the Patrick show, almost certainly will air in their entirety on the new Houston outlet, but the station could go local in late morning and afternoon drive. But the difference in Houston will be that the new affiliate will not have a local pro team; KESN is the Mavericks' flagship station.

KILT, meanwhile, will carry on with Sporting News Radio, and KBME will use Fox Sports Radio to fill in the gaps left by ESPN's departure next year.

Titans or Cowboys could be used as a pro team identifier until one of the Houston teams becomes available.

This is Vince Young, quarterback, Madison High School, National Champion University of Texas, you're listening to the home of the Tennessee Titans, Houston's new ESPN 103.7.

    Sweeeeet!!! :D

    my uneducated guess:

790 won't be sports radio much longer.

But if you read the article, it sounds like the only reason espn wanted to move is because 790 is becoming more local (which is the perceived goal of every all-sports radio station, or the reason why nobody liked 790 in the first place).

I doubt CC pulls the plug on 790... they're still heavily invested in the Astros (thus the need for sports talk somewhere on one of their stations), and the felxibility they've got now with 740 seems to be working out well for both.

Frankly, competition is good... and if the new station gets more local talent/talk radio, it can only be better for Houston sports fans. As a baseball fan, I couldn't be happier with 790 devoting tons of time to Garner, Lidge, and Dalati being one of the first one to state what the night's lineups are going to be... and his take on them... during his updates (which have been getting more informative, as long as Pallilo doesn't spill his breaking news first).

And if Rich Lord can stop making my ears bleed... that will be ideal.

they've had sports talk on 740 before. they still do the astros programming shows on 740, i believe. the weekly astros talk show still hasn't found its way over to 790.

i agree...the problem was that the station didn't have enough local flair. the question now is can they support themselves without ESPN behind them?? i don't mean that in a financial sense, but in a programming sense. how many other networks are out there that they can count on for programming now? because TSN and ESPN are taken here, now.

I'll listen to whoever actually talks about the Rockets every once in a while.

Fox Radio is going to kill 790, its terrible. espn was carrying that station along with palilo. I wanted to give davies and dukes a chance but they are terrible. they will fit right along with fox's act, I guess they call it "man" radio, but its not entertaining. that just doesn't fly in houston.

They can't. 97.5 was carrying the Cowboys games, but had to stop because of some sort of agreement or policy where they can't be on the radio in the same market as the Texans. Thank Bob McNair for that one.

i agree. the morning show is a mistake. it's just bad. crrl is fine...but davies is awful. they had Dan Patrick, which gave me some reason to turn the dial back and forth during rome's time slot.

i just don't see this lasting. i don't see that there is the huge investment in 790 as an all-sports format. they are not the affiliate for any local team...in fact, they haven't moved the astros to their all sports programming.

There is no way Houston can support three sports talk radio station.

Hell, Houston can't even support one decent FM music station.

Too bad. Too bad for McNair there's Sirius. It's funny every team puts their broadcast on Sirius except the Titans. Apparently the Titans legal dept didn't read their radio contract.

I liked that 790 changed their time to 6 AM, gives me something good to listen to in the mornings, rather than commercials at 610

I wonder why AM still exists. Heck I wonder why terrestrial radio still exists.

No way in hell 3 stations survive in Houston.

790 will die if ESPN jumps ship. That means the afternoon slot is deadweight. 610 already has rome and now the new station has dan patrick which leaves 790 with nothing. That's something like a 4 hour gap with no show to fill in. I don't even think Fox produces anything that fits in that time slot.

790 has one show that does anything and that's pallilo in the late afternoon/evening. And without ESPN, they are toast. Period.

Unfortuantely, that one show (guy) is the only knowledgable thing Houston has right now, in the sports-talk radio department. And Dalati is the only reporter out of all the medias (including tv/print/radio) that actually does his job... report on stories that the general public may not know about, and get interviews/ask the tough questions with people who actually matter. I guess Berman is great at breaking the story as well... but his time-slot is unfavorable (9:20 pm).

None of this would matter if Rich Lord and Vademeer weren't so inept... their lack of overall knowledge becomes more and more apparent each day the internet exists, and people know more about half the things they talk about before they even go on the air.
