Kurt Cobain's body was found in his Seattle home... It's true that he died a few days earlier, but April 8, 1994 is definitely one of those "where were you..." type moments. I was in Chemistry class when I first heard of Kurt Cobain's death. Now, I feel like an old man knowing it happened a decade ago... Sure, they were just a garage band with only four studio albums (if you count Incesticide), but to millions of teenagers in the early 90's, they were an escape...They weren't innovative and their music wasn't that complicated or deep, but damnit it didn't have to be. Lyrics? Who the hell cares about lyrics?!?! Nirvana wasn't metal, it wasn't pop, it wasn't quite rock...It was.....It was Nirvana, dammit, now turn it up!! Dare I say, until someone better comes along, Kurt Cobain is my generation's John Lennon...
I don't mean to be disrespectful to you guys who were really into Nirvana, but its like Marc Vandameer said earlier this week, this is not a where were you when moment.
Well I remember where I was. I was at my friend's apartment. When The news was announced, my friend yelled "Pearl Jam won!"
Oddly enough, I was in my apartment....skipping class. Nirvana was an above average rock band. That's about it.
I don't remember where I was, I know where I was when Challenger blew up, the Pope was shot, Reagan was shot but this one I draw a blank.
Events such as the explosion of the Challenger or Columbia space shuttles, or the assasination (or attempted) of a president are "Where were you when..." moments. The death of celebrities are not.
I was driving down Westheimer in my work truck and I was listening to the radio.....when I heard the news I just said to my self...'Oh ****'. My first son was born a couple of months earlier and all I could think about was his kid. Yes I liked his music.....his voice, but him killing himself was 'Dumb'. A very sad time, but 1994 was a great year, my son was born and my Houston Rockets ruled the NBA.
Gotta agree with pgabriel. I didn't even know who Kurt Cobain was when he died. I was too busy listening to Warren G & Nate Dogg at the time.
It's all relative. Some people don't give a rat's ass about the space program or who the president is and if someone shot him. A lot of times, those are the same people that are really into music. I have vague memories of the challenger, and I really can't tell you where I was for the Reagan or Pope shootings. For that matter, I can't tell you where I was when Kurt Cobain died (or when it was announced). Nevertheless, I have very distinct memories of where I was, what I was doing, and how I reacted when I learned that Stevie Ray had died. It all depends on what's really important to you, and to try and give an absolute label of what qualifies as a "where you were" to something as subjective as this is ridiculous.
I remember where I was when I heard the news about both Shuttles, Lennon, 9-11, Reagan, Cobain, but not the Pope. I also remember where I was when I heard the news that Denver knocked Seattle out of the '94 NBA Playoffs.
In response to Pole and to Ima, I should explain that I meant universal moments, the kind you can ask just about anyone and get a response. To me, if you're not into the celebrity, you won't remember where you were.
But for some odd reason, I remember exactly where I was, who I was with, and what I was doing when I heard Princess Diana passed.
I would have bet all the money I had that you were gonna post in this thread and say you remember where you were when Tupac died.
