In a debate I had with a local sports writer he posed the question "name 10 great shooters [still playing]."

After Reggie Miller, Ray Allen and Allan Houston my list started to look pretty weak. I started to resort to naming role players versus franchise players whereas his list from the previous era was filled with the Birds, Kings, Dantleys and Englishes.

His point being that the game has become, in a relatively short time, more show and less skill. Debateable but has some merit.

    Where have the shooters gone?

You could put Glen Rice and Steve Kerr on there.

I don't see skills as diminishing so much as athleticism and defense improving. There is definitely an emphasis on these earlier and earlier and writers, especially guys who are fond of waxing nostalgic, tend to always think it was "better when..."

The fact is that the game is very different from the one played 25 years ago. I remember when Jordan came into the league and everyone complained about him being a "hot dog." Hell, I remember they said the same things about the ABA and guys like Dr. J and George Gervin.

This has been going on since the league began to see more athleticism filter into the game. As "street ball" found its way from the playground to the hardwood, skills have changed.

    It's just a different game.

And you guys putting one-dimensional jackup artists like Kerr and Bullard in a "modern-day" list ought to be ashamed. The Bird's, Kings, Dantley's, and Englishes didn't set up out at the 3 point line waiting for a shot to come to them. Glen Rice was (maybe still is) good, but has he been a great shooter for any great length of time. Hubert Davis? Hmm... is he still in the league? [IMG] I don't think a shooter is just someone who stands outside and waits for an open 3 pointer to arrive. It's somebody that can move around the perimeter and light it up. Dale Ellis was freakin' evil when he was on. I still cry thinking about some of those games against the Sonics where he would torch us. Now that is a shooter. So take your Bullards and Kerrs back or I'll be forced to use my Craig Hodges attack. lol.

I believe Hershey Hawkins played for the Bulls last year.

Anyways, as much as I hate him, Kobe Bryant has one of the most fluid shots in the NBA right now, and he nails them all over the court. He has his off nights, but for the most part he shoots a good percentege and it's a beautiful shot to watch(except against the Rockets, it pisses me off!). His shot reminds me of Jordan's shot in his latter years when he would shoot lights out. 5 to 8 years from now, Kobe Bryant will be one of the best pure shooters EVER off the dribble, IMO. AND HE'LL STILL BE IN HIS 20'S!!!

Yeah, Mullin and Stockton absolutley. Stockton has been an All-star forever and if he wasn't taking the shot he was setting it up. Mullin was pure and worked for his shot. When he was with GS he was the man. Price didn't do it long enough to be put up there.

I'm tempted to put Chris Jackson in that group. He may be the purest yet.

Allen Iverson??? 42% shooting from the field, 32% on threes, and a career 74% shooter from the line? That doesn't seem like a great shooter to me. Wink is a better shooter than A.I.

I never said they were great, they are the best the NBA has to offer right now. Just showing how there is a shortage of shooters today compared to the "old days".

Mullin and Price are no longer playing, and they wouldn't crack the top twenty of my THEN list.

Stockton-would be 11th or 12th on the list

Sheesh, your NOW list is as bad as your THEN list.

I would not consider Gervin, Maravich, or English "Shooters". They were scorers. Same goes for a bunch of your NOW guys....

Where is your list? Guarantee you will not find better shooters for the NOW guys.

As for the THEN guys, you obviously never saw Gervin, Maravich or English play if you say they are not shooters. They were scorers who could shoot lights out.

Finn has a point. English and Gervin and others had both scoring ability AND the ability to shoot. That is what is sooo lacking in many of today's players.

    Adrian Dantley
    Kiki Vanderweigh (sp?)
    Bernard King
