I've been doing some research on our last 2 draft picks and how they have been playing this season. Vassillis Spanoulis 15.75ppg on 47% shooting, 41% from behind the arc. 2.15 rpg 3.15TOs per game 3.65apg I'm not sure if the fouls statistics are right, but if they are, he is foul prone like crazy. http://www.galanissportsdata.com/basketball/mena1/season2004_05/a1teamrs.asp?t=02 But he seems like he is having a good season. His team is #2 in the region. He is shooting a good percentage, especially from 3-point land, I belive one of the knocks on him was his shooting, but looks like he has improved it. His TOs are something to watch for. I'm excited to see what he can do. Malick Badaine 4.4ppg on 51% shooting 3.5rpg 0.4blp Malick is only logging in 13mpg and hasn't played in 11 of their 24 games so far (wasn't he injured or something?). I have a feeling he will stay in Euro for atleast another season. http://statistik.basketball-bundesliga.de/content/stats/team/index.php?saison=2004&team=426
It's definitely closer in. I didn't know Badiane's stats were that bad. I'm hoping the germans, what's his teams name - the frankfurters? I'm hoping this german team doesn't play Badiane as much as they should because they just don't like him cause man those stats suck.
Regarding the fouls, let's hope the Rockets, in anticipation of next year, asked him to work on his defensive skills by being aggressive.
His team's name is Opel Skyliners Frankfurt... His stats over here don't tell the whole story. You have to understand that the european style of basketball is different compared to the NBA. In europe there aren't that many Ben Wallace' type of players. The coaches prefer players who unterstand the game, have the fundamentals and can shoot and pass. That's the european style of basketball, even at the pf position. So Malick will never have stats like 35 mpg, 15 ppg, 10 rpg and 5 bpg, no matter how good he is. He simply is not a typical european player. So it will always be hard for him to get more than 20 minutes of playing time. I guess we'll have to wait and see what happens in the summer. From what I've heard the Rockets will invite him again to work out in Houston. I would say, though, that his chances of making the roster for next season are below 50 %.
I was thinking the same thing. Wasn't CD just on the radio hyping him up? I wonder what that was based on?
the european three point line is alot closer then the nba line. Also the scoring in europe is alot lower then in the usa. Almost no player ever averages more then 20 points. so 15 is pretty good. About Badiane, i do not know why he play's so little, but i think he is just not good enough.
I believe an NBA team only holds a drafted players rights for two years. After that he becomes a FA. So I think we sign him this offseason or he is "gone" (was never really here to begin with).
Nice post. I know stats never tell the whole story, but I think most of us thought that Malick would be averaging a lot better numbers, especially after CD was praising him. You're absolutely right that European basketball is completely different, but I think most of us were hoping Malick would be able to come in and help us at PF right away, but it seems like he isn't even helping his Euro team which is kinda suprising.
I would be surprised if Vassillis Spanoulis ever puts on a Rockets uniform. He is basically a point guard who plays like a shooting guard. He is also prone to turn over the ball a lot and not create many assists. There are those who say he should be playing at the 2 position. As Rockets fans we have heard this kind of stuff before. The Rockets are heading in a different direction when it comes to picking players. CD and JVG are looking for role players that know their role and that are good at their roles.
If the Rockets can get rid of Moochie this summer I look for Spanoulis to make the team as the 3td point guard. If Moochie is still here than I look for Spanoulis to make the team the following year. It looks like he is a scoring type PG which necessarily is not a bad thing on this team. He could develop into the consistent 3td scoring option this team needs behind Yao and T-mac. I am very excited about the potential of this guy and I am looking forward to see what happens with him this summer. As for Badiane, I would actually be surprised if ever puts on a Rocket's uniform (I hope iam wrong). It seems like he is a shot blocking PF with no offense game. The Rockets need someone at that position who can not only rebound but also hit the mid-range jumper. I look for them to sign someone in the offseason that will occupy the PF position for the next several yrs (Marshall, Chandler, Swift).
This is what I have heard from someone who watches him play a lot. The guy is a big fan of his brother Dimitris.
I don't think so. The Trailblazers had Sabonis' draft rights for almost 10 years. If you're thinking about how David Robinson had a chance to be a FA (or was it to be redrafted?) after he spent time in the Navy, that was because he wasn't playing organized basketball during that stint. If you're playing professional basketball somewhere, the drafting team can hold onto your rights indefinitely.
Badiane played 4 games, did fairly well and was touted on the frankfurters' website as their next star, then had what they thought was a season ending shoulder injury and had to have surgery. He still made it back for the end of the season but it would be obvious that it would take a few games playing 8-10 minutes to even begin to get him back into game shape and back into rhythm with the rest of the team, leaving him 2nd in the PF rotation. So I recommend waiting until the euro playoffs and probably until this summer and seeing what he can do.
