Damn MGM. I hope Powers kicks their asses at the box office!! Update: 'Austin Powers' Loses Title Fight MPAA Denies New Line Appeal To Jan. 24 Ruling Posted: 10:16 a.m. EST February 1, 2002 The MGM lion has knocked out the International Man of Mystery in the "Austin Powers in Goldmember" title fight. According Variety online, the Motion Picture Association of America on Thursday denied an appeal from New Line Cinema over a decision that blocked the studio from using the use of the "Goldmember" title for its next "Austin Powers" installment. MGM and United Artists, who own the James Bond movie franchise, faced off with New Line Jan. 24, and the MPAA ruled the title "inadmissible." The title parodies the 1964 Bond film "Goldfinger." MGM and UA claimed New Line failed to follow proper procedures when the studios' first petition the MPAA to ban the title. The ruling forced New Line to recall all promotional materials for the film, including thousands of copies of trailers and posters. Star Mike Myers will play four roles in the new "Austin Powers" film, including a new villain named "Goldmember." The title ruling, however, could possibly open the door for MGM and UA to object any "objectional content" within the film, reported Variety. Any legal recourse by New Line would be futile, since it would likely not conclude prior to film's release date, which is July 26, and the studio is resigned to that fact. "The appeal process has come to a close, and though New Line is disappointed by the MPAA's decision, we will abide by it," New Line said in a statement. "We remain committed to our filmmaker's vision and are moving forward." This isn't the first time MGM and UA has taken on the "Powers' franchise. In 1999, the two studios petitioned the MPAA over the use of "The Spy Who Shagged Me," but according to Variety, New Line responded in accordance with MPAA guidelines, and were cleared to use the title.
