Would have definitely preferred a buyout but Melo has consistently proven he will not give up any money ever.
Melo would have to give up money for a buyout. Keep in mind the Rockets will also not have his bird rights in order to "make him whole" next year...
If Melo declines his player option, a buyout will 100% happen. Of course, Melo has yet to turn down money.
