You watch way too much news amigo.

The Russian embassy is notoriously slow for everyone all the time. They are not purposely sabotaging valuable travel dollars to their country.

The refugee crisis is contained to certain small areas and the police have it well under control.

Anyways, this whole idea of alarmism is absurd. It's like telling someone not to visit America because they have seen on the news a constant barrage of public shootings and police brutality. Possible, but highly unlikely.

For a weekend trip that is romantic, I would go with Paris. Everyone should go at least once. None of the German towns are romantic. I like Nice, Rome, Prague, and Vienna also.

Based on your description it should be Florence as others have said. It's more affordable than Paris. Also consider Barcelona if you're thinking about Paris. Barcelona is like Paris but 3/5 the cost.

Ace, I've been to pretty much all the places suggested in this thread. Am pretty sure you have also been to some of them - where have you been so far? What's the budget?

You said you would like to visit Germany - you know that the weather can be unstable around that time of the year - you could be lucky, but it could also be cold and rainy. Have you been anywhere in Germany yet?

Where in Holland do you live again? If you really wanted to save, you could just drive across the border to Xanten ;).

ATW, good to see you in the thread. Budget isn't really the major issue as we're not going for very long. Not looking to stay in ridiculous luxury hotels or anything, but there's nothing holding us back budget wise if that makes sense. Convenience plays a part as well, which is why Germany was a thought.

And yeah, I've been to quite a few places already (to the US guys, I live in Europe so not bragging ;)). That's why I'm looking to go beyond the major cities such as Paris, Barcelona, Rome, Berlin, Budapest, etc.

Rocketjunkie, Florence is a good shout. Definitely worth a visit! I was there a few years ago and if you're a fan of art, it's an absolute must. Beautiful place for strolling and taking in the atmosphere.

As someone mentioned in this thread, Barcelona is a very affordable city and I really enjoyed it when I went. The food is delicious and the old town is really nice as well, with its winding streets with no traffic and small boutique stores. Am thinking of going again, particularly as I want to see Messi play in his home ground.

Paris is nice but the hotels are definitely much more expensive. For the price of a 5-star hotel in Budapest (which I also enjoyed) all you get is a standard 2 or 3 star in Paris. But hey, it's Paris so somewhere I like visiting for sure. Thinking about it, maybe Airbnb is an option next time I go. Not used it yet!

I don't actually live in Holland now but have a place near Amsterdam. So we would probably either drive from there or get the train. I'd fly though if something really captured my imagination!

Maybe romantic isn't quite the best description of what I'm going after, more quaint/historic. It also sounds ridiculous but not too worried about the weather - we're used to it being iffy living in Western Europe.

Several years ago we had a great trip in Belgium, going to Bruges, Ghent, Ypres, and a few other places. As someone who enjoys historic towns and buildings, I really enjoyed it. Belgium has great beer as well, which makes a difference . I wouldn't mind doing something similar in Germany, particularly as I've only really been to Berlin!

I second the Heidelberg suggestion or Grindelwald/Romantic Road (haven't been there but it's apparently a must and I'll definitely go there in the future).

Trier is also a nice historical town with a lot of sights and historic surroundings.

As ATW and some others said, weather is ****ty in Germany atm, so you may look out for that. Been a great summer though weather-wise, so maybe it will be nice next month.

Would've suggested Florence otherwise, but you've already been there. :)

    Try Trier. (Germany)

I was born near there. Moved when I was very young. Always wanted to go back. Looks very nice. Curious as to what AroundTheWorld/others say about it.

If you haven't been to Prague, that would be my #1 recommendation. Gorgeous city with cool architecture. Always have lots of little music concerts you can go to, if that's your thing.

Oh yea Prague is an excellent idea.
What about Denmark? Have you been there? I haven't but it have heard some very nice things, and it's not the old usual stuff.
    You could also try Croatia.

Another suggestion IF you are not planning only to drive is ofc Istambul. Cheap historic romantic. Actually the most romantic city I have ever been to. And good weather. You can see many of the major sites in a few days. It has everything to capture your imagination. Good food and different new tastes, old wonderful city , shopping if you are interested, wheter its the asian side or the european side Istambul is a wonderful mysterious city that has an amazing atmosphere.

I could suggest also a couple places from Greece but you said cheap so that's out of the window.
