Rockets showing interest in trading for Ricky Rubio?

Why is Rubio still wanted by some here???

 

Rubio is the point guard version of Josh Smith. A seemingly awful fit for the Rockets who will only be had if it's at an absurdly cheap cost.

With Lawson and Bev in the fold already, however, there is no chance it happens.

 

Rubio is an elite passer in the open floor, but is below average offensively in every other aspect of the game.

Again, thank god we got Lawson and not him.

I like Rubio on this team btw. Lawson/Rubio at the PG depth could be a deadly NBA point guard rotation. Odd Man out for me tho would be Bev.

 

i haven't been on here in a few weeks, and y'all are STILL talking about this dude? ricky rubio is more important to a winning team than bev and brewer? oh yeah, all those playoffs games he won in minnesota i must have forgotten about...

 

Dear lord, let it go. We dodged the Rubio bullet, so let's count our blessings and move on.

 

Because we have a lot of fans that have the collective IQ of a peanut. Things like fit and substance means nothing to them as long as things look fun or flashy. NBA and team rosters are like NBA2K to them.

 

On the (rather nebulous) Rubio trade rumor, there are not many teams for which he’d be an upgrade—and that’s before you even get to the issue of what would constitute a reasonable return value. Rubio makes $12.7 million this year, so any team acquiring him would have to send back at least $8.4 million in salary. Rubio when healthy is a fantastic defensive point guard with great passing vision who needs a ton of shooting around him to really captain an effective offense. Given those parameters, what team is really going to want him?

Now, he does have the advantage of being young enough at 24 that a team not already in the playoff mix would contemplate trading for him with the idea he can grow with their current core. And his contract at around $13.5 million per year over the next four is not too onerous if he can evolve into an average starter at point guard and stay healthy. Remember that average starters are going to fetch $15 million a year in free agency this summer.

On that contract, you can probably look at him as a slightly positive asset, with a fair amount of bust potential but also some potential to exceed his deal. Would a mid first-rounder get it done for Minnesota? It is hard to imagine a Wolves team that has invested so much in him over the years and that has nothing approximating a reasonable starter behind him would give up on him for that little. And it’s hard to see how Minnesota could acquire a player of Rubio’s equal in free agency for a similar contract value considering the poor free agent point guard crop of 2016 and the skyrocketing cap.

On the other hand, what team would really want to surrender more than that for Rubio’s services? He only represents a clear upgrade for Brooklyn, New York, Philadelphia, Sacramento, and Utah. Depending on what they think of him and their incumbent point guards, maybe Dallas or Milwaukee would view him as a superior option as well.
Rubio is an awful fit in New York’s triangle with his lack of shooting. Brooklyn can’t realistically muster the assets unless Rondae Hollis-Jefferson plus filler is going to get it done for Minnesota. Philly probably still isn’t trying to improve this year. Sacramento doesn’t have much left in trade assets they’d be willing to move and just committed to Rajon Rondo for the year. Dallas also has future pick encumbrances, although Rubio might be a good fit there with their desperate need for defense and Dirk’s shooting to help counteract Rubio’s spacing problems. Milwaukee just invested significant assets in acquiring Michael Carter-Williams, a somewhat similar player.
Utah could be more realistic, since their books are very clean going forward and Rubio could be a long-term insurance policy at the point if Dante Exum never develops after his ACL tear this year. But Rubio’s lack of shooting isn’t a great fit for a team with two traditional bigs, and it’s hard to imagine them parting with more than the aforementioned mid first-rounder even if they did want him.
At this point, Rubio is probably worth more to Minnesota than even the teams that could benefit from trading for him. I’d be shocked if he is moved anytime this year.

Isn't Ricky Rubio like injury prone tho? And honestly I like Ty/Bev. But I am open to Rubio if he is not prone to injuries.

But..... Ricky Rubio is a player who isn't on the Rockets. Therefore we are obligated to have a 100 page thread about how to obtain him.

 

Why are y'all talking Rubio in the Garm?

 

Why are they talking about Rubio at all ..... he's more expensive than Lawson who's already on the roster .... cant shoot .... and doesn't do a thing to solve the teams biggest issue - PF!!

I wouldn't count on Rubio to develop a shot or improving much his finishing at the rim. Not that it's impossible, but he's been in the league too long and he's a professional since 16. And still the same exact player with the same weakness and strengths. So all the signs aren't pointing in him developing a shot.

 

If the cost is virtually nothing and the expectations are virtually nothing, sure.

 

Josh Smith was a key factor down the stretch & our best PF last year. Not sure how some of you wanna label him a "atrocious" fit. Its just not true
