Hi everyone! I for my part really do think there's some pressure put on Yao from the CBA or the Chinese NT, whatever. Just look what happened last summer. Rudy T. had to travel all around the globe just to ensure Yao can play for the rockets. Moreover, there were options in his contract, namely to give half of his money (don't know it exactly) to teh CBA and to play for the NT whenever possible. I think it's not only Yaos will to play in the summer, he often said he'd need some rest. Hopefully it won't affect Yaos sophomore season in the NBA regarding his condition...
China doesn't want to win Asian games to "avenge" the loss to Korea last year; China wants to the Asian games because it HAS to if it wants to make the Olympics. Why is Allen Iverson, Tim Duncan, etc... sitting around training with Team USA this summer? Why are they playing a bunch of scrub opponents like Mexico and the Virgin Islands? (Great ESPN article on that yesterday, by the way.) Because team USA has to win the local continental tournament if it wants to make the Olympics. Yao Ming might not care about the Asian games too much, but you can be damn sure he (and the other NBA stars) care more about representing their country in the Olympics than they do about "resting up". And if you can't appreciate that, you're a sad excuse for a human being. I just hope you aren't Chinese, but I fear you might be. Sad, sad, sad.
Heech you stupid ****, I'm just voicing my opinion, if that makes me "sad excuse for a human being", than you are ****ed up you dumb ****. All those players on the US team wanted to be there, and if anyone didn't, they weren't forced. Shaq said he doesn't want to play along side Bibby and be coached by Larry Brown, so he chose not to be on the team. Do you think Yao MIng has a similar choice? No he does not. Of course Yao Ming love his country, but does his country really appreciate him that much? Look what happened to Wang Zhizhi, before 2002 he was the representative for Beijing 2008, now he's considered a traitor. I'm sure he loves China as much as anyone. Yet Chinese basketball association would not let him stay here in America to hone his skills during the summer, even though it is vital for his career. Those idiots over in China love to build up someone and tear them down as soon as something or someone don't agree with their "vision". And yes China must win Asian games to make the Olympics, but why force Yao Ming to play all those minutes against those scrubs? He has no motivation and in Tianjin he said that he was tired and the stadium conditions were so terrible he needed to be checked up during halftime by a doctor. And yeah I'm sorry to burst your bubble, but you seem so bent on kissing ass to the Chinese basketball beaurocracies, but if they remain stupid and arrogant with their attitudes and mismanagement of talent, then yes they will lose to Korea in the future.
Sounds like "IRS overtaxed me. I hate the America. I'm not gonna support anything that benefits the America."That's wrong on so many levels.
chill man. judging from later part of your post you are smart and capable of making point without those *s. are those really necessary? having said that, you are totally confused the USA NT with the China NT. the former is based on NBA starS and latter on CBA players and occasionaly NBA star (Yao) and player (Bateer). get the picture? if the situation is reversed i'm sure Shaq'd be persuaded, or coerced depends on how you see it, to play.
Hey, Korean buddy, relax. Yao cannot relax untill he beat your Korean basketball team, last champion of Asia.
Consider this : In China, playing for the country is a glory that supercedes any personal, individual glory. Add to this, that the right to play abroad is a privilege granted by the government and sports authorities, not a right. I have no doubt that Yao wishes to play in the NBA and be as competitive as he can be... but in the eyes of the government, if he should place himself before the country, he is a traitor... and traitors don't get clearance to play overseas. I figure, hey, he needs to play a few days in an International tourney. Big deal. The US players are playing in Olympic qualifiers soon (and the subsequent Olympics, I assume). I don't see anyone saying anything about that.
Boys, boys, calm down. If YM wants to *PLAY* for the CNT, good for him. The issue is training the entirety of the summer for a ten-day tournament. YM should have enough stature to say "Look, FIBA rules say I need to be present two weeks before any tournament begins. I will happily give the month prior to the start of the tournament, but I need the remainder of the sumer to rest and recuperate." Period. He is not doing himself, the Rockets, or the CNT any good by "toughing it out," and not giving himself more than a few weeks to "not think about basketball."
anyone ever heard the expression family before work? the cba and China's NT are organizations that nurtured yao and got him where he is today and into the NBA, yao owes them for doing that. He has grown up playing with those players and under those coaches, thus they are like family and the whole wang zhizhi crisis can be understood from that. Now if you asked yao which one he would rather have, an nba championship ring or a gold medal in 2008, you can guarantee that he wants the bigger chunk of metal. does this mean he cant have both? no. It just makes working for it a little harder, but you can never deny desire. The asian games are not the world championships, but you still wouldnt want your NT to lose any game simply because you didnt include your best players, ala our team last year.
If you have a point, I have no idea what it is. If Yao Ming doesn't want to play, if he doesn't have the motivation to play, then him tell us. Your theories about everything else is ridiculous. Maybe you don't have the motivation to play for your national team, but most athletes have more pride in their nations. And you know what else? Mengke Bateer received clearance to play in the NBA summer league this year (while Yao Ming was already in China), because the Chinese "basketball beaurocracies" recognized that he needed to develop his NBA career. He gained Beijing approval for the move, which contributed to his eventual contract with the Toronto Raptors for the upcoming season. Shockingly, he didn't have the problems that Wang Zhizhi did. Gee, I wonder why? Do I think Yao Ming has a choice to skip out of the Chinese national team summer games? Well, Bateer got to exercise the choice, so I'm sure as hell positive that Yao Ming has a "choice". But I'm equally sure the thought of exercising choice didn't cross his mind for a second, because he's the kind of human being most of us respect. And you? I still know nothing about you except you have a potty-mouth, and little propensity for rational discussion.
after 60 posts in here, I'm surprised about your belief of how little this board knows... --for heaven's sake, this board has unofficially voted yao the "most black player in rockets". makes me wonder where those black skin were... yao must have hided them pretty well. -- oh, ya, it must be the scars yao got while being slave of CBA! ain't that proves all your theory? so, yes, unless you have any new breakthrough or insider's info about yao's contract, I do believe this board is well informed about this matter.
not to argue with you. but I see a different person in Yao. sure, I believe Yao wants to represent his country. (so did Wang) but I really doubt he's willing to give up his whole summer for a ten-day tournament. I'm sure Yao'd been so much happier if the Chinese NT training camp started one month before the tournament instead of 4 months! I'm sure he wanted to have a break after years of non-stop basketball. but after seeing what happened to Wang, he has to consider the consequesce of disagreeing with the CBA. Bateer at least had his NBA career on the line this summer, which would make a better excuse and the CBA was much more accomodating probably because they realized that the way they dealt with Wang wasn't so right after all. On the other hand, Yao can't expect the CBA to be so kind if he requested the CBA to put off the start of the NT training camp just for him to have a rest, not to mention the bad publicity such action would generate in the general public. call it conspiracy theory if you like, I see such a crafty person in Yao. don't forget Yao is a shanghainese!!
Well, Yao will have the chance to stay in the US for the summer once he is a restricted FA. At that time, he is probably going to be used up by the CBA or will fight for his next contract. He is surely not going to earn the Max without much improvement during his rookie contract since he has no chance to improve himself during the summers.
Does anybody here know the IRS regulations regarding foreign nationals working in the US? Also I remember some states with income taxes were trying to tax the amount of income earned by sports stars from other cities for the period they work within their state. How did that play out? Any tax attorneys reading this board?
For those that can read Chinese http://china.yaoming.net/53/05/news212310553.shtml Rough translation: This article was written by Rich Boucher (sp?) of ESPN, he recently travelled to China to visit Yao Ming and the Chinese National Team. In his observation, he found that the training methods used by the Chinese are very backwards, and are very boring. He made a few comparisons with the NBA and concluded that in this environment players are strained, stressed, and bored, and they have no motivation. Also he noted most players when playing defense are merely posturing, and that those kinds of defense practiced by the Chinese are futile if used against NBA type players. He commented that in the NBA star players communicate often with the coaching staff and receive special attention and treatment, however on the Chinese National Team Yao seems to follow exact orders. He can feel the pressure that these Chinese players face, but think that in order to improve, the Chinese must adopt more advanced coaching methods. ****ing CBA just let Yao and other teammates to play a lot for the sake of their earning commercially. I hope Yao won't be back in next ABC.
