They asked Luhnow... I posted it when me and Hey Now! were going back and forth about it (he thought it would be doubtful that they'd attempt Lowrie at first, given how much Carter had played there). Luhnow was open to it... but it very well likely came down to where Lowrie was comfortable... and as you said earlier, with the shift he plays the SS-3B better than Valbuena does. And his arm, while weaker than Valbuenas, is still more accurate... and Valbuena is still a platoon player who's going to have to move more than Lowrie (who should be in the lineup everyday if healthy).
