Hi guys I am on the west coast. Been having trouble accessing http://www.microsoft.com. Does anybody else experience the same problem?? Wonder if this is due to the power outage or the site is under attack
hmm, try this: www.microsoft.com the period after '.com' was inadvertantly added to the address in ur link..
i don't know what's up with microsoft's DNS or web servers but from my understanding adding an ending period for DNS lookups does not matter. Actually I believe having the ending period may be a little better as it notifies the DNS query that the hostname is absolute. can anyone clarify?
Lets put it this way... when I clicked on the link olliez provided with the extra period, i got a 404.. when I removed it manually from the address bar... I got microsoft.com I stand corrected...
correct. the "." is a label separator (delimiter). For instance, bbs clutchcity net are three labels. However, there is actually one more label in there. It is the reserved label representing the root of the DNS tree. That is the NULL label. So, movement is correct. bbs.clutchcity.net. is an absolute name, because it specifies the root label. The only reason you can get by without relative names is because most DNS programs will default to using the root label to complete a relative path. btw: try pinging with a "." on the end. It works. I can also place one in IE, but that can depends on whether a "/" gets auto-appended by IIS or apache for that domain. Now, if you still don't believe me, try added a "." to the end of google.

The only time I did not preview my post.... I have not looked PHP encoding algorithm, but I think it picks up "http" automatically as an URL in the main body of post. But then again, Microsoft is doing a lot of things in very weird way. Like : "....
