I tell you what, he really needed to fill out upper body wise, and from several pics he has made strides in that area...So I'm thinking the trip will only help him to focus on strength now that he has the bulk...

    I hear you guys, but.........................................................

I don't know if its a good sign or not that the conditioning coach takes an emergency trip to talk to you about your ICE CREAM diet

Seriously guys, The pics I saw on the board, YAO looked fat, well not really fat but no cut or muscle tone to his body

It was definately bigger, but he looked a little chunky in my opinion, I could be wrong

But as long as I been a Rocks fan, I have never heard of Falsone takin trips in the summer time to talk diets...I hope I'm wrong, but I don't see him goin to Steve, Cat, MO, or even Catos talkin about diets....... I don't know but it seems a little fishy to me

Falsone is worried about Yao being 320, not because he's too big. It would be nice to be that heavy. We're not talking about muscle, people.

He's worried that Yao needs to keep his weight down to prevent injury to his feet and knees. It's about muscle/fat weight ratio.

If Yao gets too heavy too fast (fat), then he'll put too much pressure on his body when he pushes it during NBA games.

He'll start having foot and knee problems later in his career.

Falsone is trying to prevent this. This is what happened to Hakeem and Shaq: they got too heavy in the off-season, then injured themselves in NBA games. Their bodies were unable to handle the extra "fat" in addition to their muscle mass.

i am amazed by what people define as "fat".

hakeem got "fat" in the offseason?

yao looks "fat" to you in those pictures?

shaq was "fat"? slightly overweight, i'll give you. the man was probably overweight by about 20 pounds. when i think of "fat" i think of tractor traylor. when i think of "fat" i think of two sammiches. when i think of "fat" i think of oliver miller. when i think of "fat" i think of pig miller.

those guys had t***. shaq, yao, motay, hakeem, etc. have never had t***. none of them even had love handles. those other dudes were porkers.

i think i've seen all the new yao pics here in the last couple of weeks and he's sure isn't fat in any of them. he has definitely put on some bulk but nothing that i would consider harmful. i'm thinking falsone is going over to see him in person and make any necessary adjustments to his training.

Well, we're talking about star professional athletes here, so every pound counts. I mean, an NBA season is pretty much an endurance test. You don't see Lance Armstrong bulking up for the Tour de France, do you?

Okay, now that is funny :D

    verse,

I think the standard of being "fat" for a normal person is different from that of an NBA player. The game demands a lot of pounding on the feet, ankles, knees and legs. Added weight without added strength in those areas increases the wear and tear and it will show when age is a factor.

I think a lot of tall players have foot or knee problems.

Personally, I don't think Yao look fat. I think he just need to lift more weight to make his upper body more bulkier. I think this will definitely increase his stamina and strength that he lacks last year which limited his mins on court. I hope this doens't slow down his speed though. From the pics i seen, I thought he looks great compare to last year skinny upper body. It's hard to get a person like Ming to be fat. He's more of the skinny type nobody how much he eat, that's my 2 cents. I say this because I myself are the skinny type and will never see myself fat nobody how much i eat...it's THE GENE man!!;)

Yao has played at least 30 minutes in each of the games this summer. The 4 recent games against the Aussies has seen the big man play more than 40 minutes...

That alone tells you that his stamina has improved.

    so magic johnson was fat?
    larry bird was fat?
    danny manning was fat?

i think i know what you're trying to say, jshabang, but "fat" is just the wrong word. johnson, bird, & manning (just to name a few) never had a muscle on their bodies. they had zero muscle tone, yet i couldn't imagine them being called "fat".

i know i'm being somewhat of a pain in the ass about this, but it irks me. i mean, it seems like you (and others) are basically saying if you aren't ripped, or thin, you're fat; and that's wrong on more levels than i care to go into.

I heard the Van Gundy and the rest of the coaching staff was suppose to visit Yao around now maybe that is why Falsone is only their to visit and not really train Yao but give him some advice before the season starts.

I don't see how this is bad. Falsone will take 3 days to instruct Yao how to trim fat and NOT lose any of the muscle he's been putting on. If he walks into camp at 310, I think he'll look toned and stronger. It's perfect. All he needs to do is cut out some baby fat, and we'll see a better built Yao soon.

Things are looking good, I'm so glad to hear Falsone made his way to China. Hopefully, when training camp starts on Oct 3, or when Yao arrive a while later, he'll be in perfect shape.

310 thats how much he weighed when he left Houston in April. So I hope that he can be at 320 but cut down on the fat.
