people can stop complaining that hinch is a zen cyborg. yawl wanted him riled' up. he did you all better and got thrown out! gangsta!
Yes There is a manager in San Francisco that does it using Posey at 1b when back up catcher is playing. We have a guy that catched for the Braves so under no issue on having him as an emergency catcher.
When somebody is a DH they can't be replaced without losing the DH. If Castro were to get hurt and Conger had to take the field, pitchers would have to hit the rest of the game
I don't see why this is a big deal. It's one game, and unless he's hurt in the first few innings, the pitchers would could be PH for later in the game anyway. On the freak chance that the catcher is injured mid-game (how often does this happen?), your pitcher might have 1 AB or 2 AB at most. If Conger is a better DH than our other options, that crazy scenario is not a reason to leave him on the bench. That said, that's a big IF. Conger's stats are a little fluky due to a small sample size and he hasn't every shown being some kind of elite RHP-killer in the past.
Pinch hitting or pinch running for Castro would kill off your DH as well. It certainly isn't a huge deal, but it's probably big enough. AL teams have very thin benches to begin with. If an AL team has a catcher that hits well enough to DH regularly, carrying a 3rd catcher would probably go along with it.

Gomez is clearly gripping way too tightly. He's trying to hit everything through the stadium. The coaching staff has to get in his ear and convince him to take something off his swing. I can't fathom benching Lowrie. If you want to give him a rest, DH him. We have an emergency catcher in Gattis. He hasn't put on the gear this year...including Spring Training, if I remember correctly.
It might be worth just moving him down in the order until he can get going as that hole has been a problem of late.
