This trade could easily wind up being a huge overpay but Im not sure if Phillips' power was just a minor league illusion and I think that's pretty much what could make this trade good or bad for us long-term. Obviously an outfielder was really needed.
Good sarcasm. I like it. Two separate posts. Simply inserting a new player into a successful lineup can alter the team chemistry. Regardless of how horrible he was hitting, Jake Marisnick is big in the Astros locker room. You simply aren't paying attention if you can't see this team is playing with nowhere near the energy they were earlier in the season. What's really incredible analysis is calling someone else's laughable, meanwhile offering no substance of your own. Same young/happy team? I don't see Marisnick out in CF making diving grabs pumping up the team with his demeanor out on the field. Instead, I see Carlos Gomez, a cocky SOB that barely hits any better than Marisnick but acts like he's one of the best players in baseball. But let me be clear. I just want the Astros to win. I truly hope lots of you can come in here and call me a moron, claim my analysis is laughable, etc. That will mean the team is winning and the trade is working. But if the losing continues, Gomez doesn't start hitting above .275 and hit more than a homer every 10-12 games, and Phillips and/or Santana turn into stars, then this will undoubtedly be a bad trade for the Astros.
Weird how they won a whole bunch of games after the trade. No - your analysis is laughable regardless of the results on the field.
We suck on the road. We're awesome at home. That was true before the trade and is true after the trade. Trying to associate the two at this point is a waste of time.
First, can you tell us more locker room stories? You obviously are in there since you know how players act in the locker room. Second, earlier in the season, when they lost 7 in a row, and were playing quite similar to how they played last week, why wasn't Marisnick's locker room leadership getting them out of their funk? Third, however did they sweep the Angels with Gomez in the lineup?
Yep, it's crazy to try and say this trade hurt the team. Heck, Fiers was great yesterday don't think it was something about him being on the team that caused Luke to give it up, lol
Whoever's ragging on the Gomez trade is way off base. The issues the Astros have been dealing with are the loss of Springer and the Bull Pen regressing HARD over the last month and a half. I think everyone needs to just calm down and realize that the Astro's are a good team this year but still need some improvements over the offseason to become truly "elite".
Man, that Carlos Gomez guy is a STUD. Best centerfielder in all of baseball and absolutely worth one of the top 20 minor league prospects in all of baseball. Some of you need to get Luhnow's wang out of your mouths and actually watch some baseball.
Maybe I should have said top 21. Here you go: http://www.baseballamerica.com/minors/midseason-top-50-prospects2015/ On this site, he's 29th with the write-up listing him as a possible top 20 by the end of the year: http://www.minorleagueball.com/2015/7/12/8940113/top-75-mlb-prospects-mid-season-update The guy hits for average, has speed, power, and is a good fielder. As for Gomez, he's hitting .204 with like a .550 OPS for the Astros. Pitiful numbers for a guy that was supposed to come in here and add some hitting to a lineup filled with sub-.250 hitters. Outside of good defense, which we already had with Marisnick, what's he brought to this team so far?
fair, i'll take my comment back. Last I saw was January when he was down in the 70s For me, I'll trust that they didn't believe in something about Phillips--and they watch him a ton. I assume it was the power. But we'll see
Thanks man. Appreciate the civil conversation. I don't think it had anything at all to do with not trusting Phillips. Seems more likely they just decided to try and go almost all in this year with how well the team was playing. Offense is this team's biggest weakness, especially consistent hitting. We can hit the ball out of the park but outside of Altuve, Correa, and Lowrie (who we just got back), we don't have anyone that just gets on base consistently. So Luhnow swung for the fences a bit and went for Gomez. So far, it isn't working out like he hoped. My frustration really stems from how much we gave up when we probably could have had Cespedes for the same package. I feel like when the Mets deal fell through, we got too ahead of ourselves and rushed into the deal. Right now the trade doesn't look good, for any objective viewer, but only time will fully tell. Obviously if Phillips never pans out, then at worst the trade is a wash. Josh Hader shows some promise as well, but the guy the Brewers really wanted was Phillips. It just makes me sick to my stomach to think about what this team would be playing like if we had Yoenis Cespedes batting cleanup behind Carlos Correa, Preston Tucker, and Jose Altuve. And in a month from now, we'd be looking at a lineup of George Springer, Jose Altuve, Carlos Correa, and Yoenis Cespedes. Ouch...
If there were another Carlos Gomez thread, I'd post in there. There isn't. So yeah, this thread will get bumped every now and then. If Gomez finally turns it around and becomes a net positive to this team, I'll bump it one last time to praise him, eat some crow, and move on. I hope that's the case.
