he started getting teary eyed in his exit conference. wants to come here and win the championship. I'm already a carlos gomez fan. A sexier michael bourne without the grand theft bases. We officially have the best defensive outfield..maresnick/springer/Gomez
I'm sure there will be a spot for tucker.

Also Rasmus is a great defensive outfielder.

We now have 4 center fielders in our team.

Wish they would at least give Tucker some reps in fielding drills at 1B.

Ill just reiterate LOL at your eye tests.

What advanced stats make him better than Gomez or put him ahead of all but "very few"?

Try again chief. How anyone - and I mean ANYONE - can second guess our front office at this point is beyond me.

We're going for it now which is exactly what we should be doing. Sucks losing a blue chipper but Gomez does more for us than Philips ever would this year. Good for us.

    Brewers fans thought

I'm a Brewers fans and came here to see what you guys thought of the trade, but then thought i'd register and give you guys my thoughts on the two players you just got.

    Sorry for long post

    Gomez

His time with us was very interesting. After he was traded here for JJ Hardy, Gomez pretty quickly drew the ire of most Brewer fans for a couple of reasons, myself included. Carlos shockingly in retrospect went from being my most hated Brewer to now my most favorite Brewer since Braun turned out to be such a douchebag after getting busted for roids.

    1. He swung at literally almost every pitch, so he rarely walked and mixed with a poor BA, his OBP numbers were terrible and dumb managers would bat him leadoff just because he was fast. An out machine batting leadoff.

    2. He was so hyper and so wanting to do well that way to often he ran into ugly outs on the bases thinking he could just outrun the ball. Made out of control throws.

    3. Here he had ridiculous speed and a cannon for an arm in CF, but both were often a curse as he'd try making plays with both his legs/feet which weren't realistic.

Fast forward to 2012 in his transformation owed largely to Dale Sveum, our batting coach then. He told Carlos to stop trying to hit the ball on the ground and bunt a lot as had been the norm from previous coaches. Instead he told Gomez to simply swing for the fences which seemed odd thinking at the time, but proved to be brilliant. Carlos is no skinny fast guy, he's built more like an NFL safety, but still super fast.

Well, everything changed almost instantly. Carlos would swing almost every time like trying to jack it 400 feet vs trying to slap ground balls. Would look ugly at times as his helmet flew off, but his BA went up, homers way up, more line drives in the gap, etc.

His walk rates while still below average, are quite a bit better now that he at least has learned to take more pitches. Generally has hit better with men on base. You can bat him anywhere from say 1-6 in the order.

Defensively, with healthy legs, the guy is a joy to watch. Once he gets going, he tracks down balls i was sure would fall. Might have the best arm in baseball at CF at least. Has the height and instincts to pull balls back over shorter walls. He will though still make some very frustrating throws instead of hitting the cutoff man.

Last thing. Gomez is the favorite Brewer of most fans because

    1. Nobody will play harder than him and i'm not saying that with homer blinders. Your team for pretend could be 20 games under .500 and he'd crash into a wall for a ball. Hustle as if it was a playoff game instead.

    2. Great personality and teammate. Don't get fooled by a few incidents like with McCann and the Braves. Many players on the team would say Gomez was the heart and soul of the locker room. Always trying to keep the team positive, regardless if in a bad stretch. Yea, at times he'll bat flip after hitting a bomb, but not so to show up the pitcher, he simply has fun playing the game.

Not sure why his numbers are down this year, but his legs/hip look fine to me. Two games ago he used that speed to make a really nice diving catch.

He'll quickly become a fan favorite.

    Fiers

Hard guy to explain. He has always struck hitters out pretty well, but his fastball sits only in the 88-91mph range. Also has a solid change and curve.

Many opposing hitters have said that his funky delivery can cause them to not see the ball well. There has to be truth in that because more than any Brewers pitcher i can recall, Fiers leaves more hitters shaking their heads after striking out on say an 89mph fastball, with a look like how the hell didn't i crush that pitch? This especially happens a lot on higher fastballs where hitters think i'm going to hit this pitch 500 feet, instead they swing right through it.

That said, when a hitter is looking fastball, time his delivery better, and Fiers leaves the ball over the middle of the plate, it gets crushed a lot as evidenced by his HR allowed rate. So he'll be cruising/dominating in some games with lots of K's and hitters mumbling to themselves on the way to the dugout, but then say he walks a guy, next guy singles, and then boom, it's a three run jack. Fiers is a flyball pitcher and your short porch in left likely will hurt him at times.

One not known thing with Fiers from fans of other teams is he accidentally hit a batter in the face i believe late in the 2012 season and it really messed him up mentally for awhile. Mentioned that it took quite a bit of time to want to pitch again, much less throw inside again.

You guys here already know that Fiers will never be an ace and No. 2 type of starter likely a stretch. He is a very solid starter though and under team control through 2019. Given the cost of pretty much any starter with a pulse come free agency, solid starters who usually keep your teams in games and aren't expensive, those type of starters can have more value than some fans think who tend to focus more on flame throwing aces that are fairly rare commodities which every team craves.

ESPN: Carlos Gomez has a +87 defensive runs saved since 2007, next closest is M. Bourn with 65. That's based on what the avg CF produces. That's 87 more than the AVG CF.

For those who believe Marisnick is superior for whatever reason.

We got better. I feel like I'm dreaming. #ClubAstros

To be fair, how many CFers currently in the league and not well-past-their-prime have been in the league since 2007? I really like Gomez, but this is one of those artificial counting stats that doesn't mean a lot. It's timed specifically for him. What are the best defensive-runs-saved over the last 2 years? or 4 years? That would be more meaningful for showing Gomez's defensive value than counting back to 2007 and comparing to many players weren't even around yet.

    True.

I'll try to look it up, but it says alot about his staying power in league. Add in his GG, ASG, MVP top 20 voting and it's warranted.

His 38 DRS in 2013 is like the second highest total of any player since at least 2000 which is when fangraphs started keeping the stat. Andrelton simmons had 41 the same year.

Obviously that was an outlier season but it was pretty recent.

Still waiting on lolnook to back up his comments

Defensive stats in baseball still lag far behind offensive ones in accuracy IMO, but watching the guy each year with a Brewers, he didn't win that Gold Glove last year like some guys do in very undeserving ways.

He's not one of those small skinny type of CF's with immediate quickness, but once he gets a step or two going towards a ball, he's a blur and it's amazing to see a guy that big/strong get to some of the balls he gets to. He's fabulous defensively.

His only flaw defensively is decision making at times. Gomez has a cannon for an arm at the CF position, but that can be where the bad part of his brain gets him in trouble as he ignores the cutoff man and instead goes for getting the baserunner out, which wasn't possible even with a perfect throw.

Then you'll see him yelling at himself for that decision, but it will happen again, just not as frequently as when he first arrived where i'd regularly be screaming at the TV, Carlos what the hell are you doing.

yeah i've watched the brewers a good amount of times (thank you MLB TV) and he will have some head scratching plays like the other night when he got caught stealing in the top of the 9th vs the giants.

Gomez has won a gold glove and his defense has been his strongest tool. Marisnick is fantastic in CF but I don't think he's better, he might not be worse either.

I actually like this trade after reading up on Fiers (who will be under club control until 2019). I feel the front office sees something in him they can tweak to elevate his game the same way they did with McHugh (dropping the 4 seam fastball for the 2 seam fastball.

Plus Gomez for 2016 as well makes up for losing Phillips. I dont mind losing the other prospects. Astros still have a tremendous depth of OF prospects with Cameron, Fisher, Kyle Tucker, maybe Bregman or Kemp could end up there as well.
