    I need some advice.

My wife and I have decided to forgo a vacation this year to get a washer and dryer for the house we rent. The air vent and gas connection for the dryer are already in the garage so the installation bit shouldn't be to hard. (I Hope.)

Half of my friends say we should just buy a used set to save a bunch of money and the others say we should goto a place like Lowes or Best Buy to get the extra warranty that comes with the purchase. I just don't want to go to the washateria anymore!

What do you think? We're looking to spend around five or six hundred dollars and we're about two weeks out from the purchase.

If we go for used ones are there things I should look for?

    thanks

I rarely buy used stuff, but that's my own phobia...

If new, you should be able to get Best Buy, Sears, etc. to price match...Best Buy usual has a 1 or 2 year no finance charge, which I'm all over...Either way, get the warranty...

man, what are you talking about? washaterias are cool. you meet all sorts of nice and strange people there. it's almost like being at a wafflehouse, living in the dorms of a university, or something. if i didn't already have a washer and dryer, i'd be at the washateria every few days or so.

i use my dryer mostly in place of ironing my clothes. :D

ooops... sorry that didn't help. just thought that you were making a mistake by not going to the washateria anymore. interesting people there and it's exciting.

I don't understand the options: Used or Extended warranty at Lowes or Best Buy?

If you mean a new washer and dryer at Lowe's/Best Buy, I would pass on the extended warranty.

If you buy from Lowe's and have them deliver it, they will almost always damage some part of the appliance, cosmetic or otherwise. If you complain, Lowe's will refund you 10% of the purchase price.

DO NOT BUY AN EXTENDED WARRANTY FROM BEST BUY!

I REPEAT: DO NOT BUY AN EXTENDED WARRANTY FROM BEST BUY!

Want to know what a scam this is? Spend a bit of time reading at http://www.bestbuysux.org and you'll understand.

Go to Lowe's and buy an Energy Star compliant set. Whirlpool has a high capacity set for like 5-600 for the two.

Don't fall for that crap about how you need some digital, front loading Neptune/Duet super machine, etc.

Energy Star = the same savings as the front loaders...

Plus, if you buy them at Lowe's, it's no interest charged if you pay them w/in 6 months I think - not a bad deal.

RIET - Yes, sorry I wasn't clear. Should we buy a used pair from some place on Shepherd or a new pair from Lowes, Sears, Best Buy, Etc. with warranty.

OS - Not that I don't like going to the washateria, there's a really cool one within a few blocks of my house. I just would like to be able to get other chores done while waiting on the clothes!

    Thanks for the input.
