Not sure which fourm to put this in. The vacation destination topics tend to be here. So let's give Americans more vacation. more vacation
While some more vacation is a good thing, I don't think we should try to match Europe. A week or two more would be great, but taking whole MONTHS off like they do in Europe really destroys productivity. Our European counterparts (in my company) are ALWAYS on vacation and NEVER get anything done.
Same here about the vacationing europeans in the company. Forget about any kind of productivity in August from euros. End of July is also bad.
I don't think it's more vacations but allowing people to take vacations without feeling guilty or worried about their job. 3 weeks is a reasonable amount but not if you have to work twice as much just prior to or after returning from your vacation.
I haven't been on vacation for an eternity. But, I take long mental vacations right here at my desk! I wonder which my company should really prefer.
There was a great article in the chronicle the other day about this. I'm all for it, we are tooooo overworked.
Look at the bright side. If you don't take any vacation, then when you retire or go to another company, you get that vacation time back in one HUGE check...
Not always, most of the companies I've worked at don't roll the vacation over like they used to. It just expires...
My company lets you earn (at a rate of approximately 3 hrs per pay period) up to 120 hours of vacation (which is 3 weeks worth). So what I've done is earned the max and then gotten in the habit of taking a day off each month. However, I don't think the company would be too unhappy about me taking a longer vacation. I've read that in order to properly "recharge," the average person needs at least 2 weeks. So I think companies should be flexible enough to allow people to take that every year (unless they take alot of single day vacations for whatever reason).
Vacation is always good... I've heard about the European's and their months off...I can't imagine, but I guess I wouldn't object to some time off...And like the other guys said, its bette to take time off without feeling guilty...
I believe the site is proposing that a minimum of three weeks be put into law like the minimum wage. I think it would be good for many people. If I recall the Chronicle article said the average nationwide is only 8 days.
Yeah, look at all these bozos looking for vacation time while they're surfing bbs' and other Internet sites. "Oh my, my finger is clicked to death... I need a vacation from my... *cough*... work" Seriously, I remember when I started working, all I cared about was the money. You could tell me I had no days vacation, but if you paid me well enough, it would be alright. Besides, most people get 2 days vacation every week.
Well put DoD. Vacation is not a universally acknowledged thing. One holy day out of the week is pretty much what the rest of the world does, I mean the non western world. Euros are lazy, I know because I am one, and that is why they fell behind economically to the US. And the practice of taking off work five times a day to pray leaves Saudis, a place where I have lived for roughly six years, doing very little in a work day. Hard work is one of the things Americans have to stand on. I know you aren't saying give up work all together, but Like DoD said - some people aren't living for their next vacation. I need money and I want money and I think there are employers out there who would rather have that kind of employee than one who is spending his time at work waiting for time off. Vacation is given to employees because it increases their productivity when they return to work. Not out of obligation or kindness.
Our company gives 2 weeks right off the bat and 3 weeks after 5 years. You cannot roll it over, so use it or lose it Sick Pay - 1 day per month after 1 year and you can roll this over year to year. I have 3 weeks vacation and 60+ sick days. The bad part is I feel guilty as heck when I take it
