Broadchurch--it's a crime drama that takes place in a small British town. They made an American adaptation called Gracepoint which isn't nearly as good. The Killing is another pretty good Crime drama that I binged through.
Here are a few that I can recommend without reservation. As for the political aspect of West Wing, obviously it's a show about the White House. But it's also possibly the best written, acted, and directed TV drama of all time. And while House of Cards is okay in my opinion, WW is the gold standard not just of political dramas but of all dramas. West Wing, The Americans, Damages, The Shield, The Wire, Rectify, Orphan Black, Six Feet Under, Twin Peaks, The Good Wife. Here are a couple I'd really highly recommend even though you don't want "comedies," because they walk the line as OITNB does. Enlightened is pretty great and Laura Dern is fantastic in it. And Louis C.K. has completely redefined the sitcom. His show Louie is one of the best things on TV and it makes me cry almost as often as it makes me laugh.
My top 5 in no particular order would have to be: Friday Night Lights Breaking Bad Hell on Wheels The Fall The Red Road
As far as the series owned by Netflix - The Killing, I thought was great (only seen 2 seasons actually). The Fall was good and currently enjoying Lilyhammer.
The Killing is fantastic. The lead, Mireille Enos, is from Houston actually and she's super nice. I went to high school with her sister. Mireille was at the same high school (HSPVA) four years later.
Go ahead and get through season 2. Season 3 is adequate, it declines in suspense after season 2, and quality after season 3. I can't even remember the season 5 plot.
Thank you everyone for the suggestions thus far, it is appreciated. I forgot to mention that I watched Daredevil already and thought it was fantastic. So, I'm considering a few : Friday Night Lights - great reviews, but I hear it has some bad camera angles that can get nauseating. True? Hell on Wheels Rectify The Killing The Fall I like dramas that involve killing as well - doesn't have to be a huge aspect to the show, but I like the drama that it brings. Anyways, I think I'm going to start one of the 5 that I listed above later tonight.
The first half of the season was not so great, but the second of the season was much better. It's really hard to get through the first three episodes.
Peaky Blinders was a surprise because I never seen a British show before. Turned on subtitles though accents were very strong. Going to start Lillyhammer and Bloodline next.
