By the time they knew what was up they were pinned down and the assault rifle was firing on them. waiting it out would likely have gotten more of them killed
This, they couldn't just sit there and get shot at - especially with Woodrugh's combat background. Once Dixon got picked off all hell broke loose. Velcoro gave Woodrugh that look, and you knew it was on. With that said, apparently the shooting scene was pretty tough on the crew and it took 5 days to shoot - http://variety.com/2015/tv/news/true-detective-rachel-mcadams-shootout-1201539788/
Didn't they chase the car down on foot, which led them to get trapped between multiple shooters? I may need to rewatch that scene to remember the chain of events. Also have a feeling that they got setup by their own dept, and that'll come out next episode.
They were initially trapped down by the guy in the window, they only pursued them after they jumped in the Suburban - which came after they killed like 10 people and cops. Spoiler I think the mayor of Vici set them up.

Go back and watch season one. It took about 3 or 4 episodes before ishhh got real. This has potential to get get really good. That being said the acting was so good in season one.
There was just no-line that I didn't buy last year. Everyone loved McConaughey, but Woody was also freakin amazing. He had depth and his own demons, and he was able to communicate that without over-acting. I'm enjoying this season still, but freakin Vince Vaughn is coming off like a cartoon. That has to be bad directing bc VV has done better in the past.
If you guys are looking for something similar to season 1 you may want to check out Hannibal. Season's 1 and 2 are on Amazon instant and I think I actually like it a little bit better.
His little "be safe out there" quip pretty much yelled things weren't going to go well and he'd probably be involved somehow.....
I've been just as disappointed in McAdams as I have VV this season. Some of her stuff just comes off as TRYING WAY too damn hard to be dark and brooding. And her conversation with her sister this last episode was so wooden. The line "I should have been there for you" was pathetically delivered. I don't know. I can't get behind any of these characters and I feel like that's the biggest difference between this season and last for me. Even with Woody's infidelity last season I still connected with his character. This season I don't care about McAdams, Farrel, Vaughn or Kitsz at all. Velcoro comes the closest but the second he called his "son" a "fat p***y" I didn't really want to listen to him anymore. I don't know. I'm this far so I'll probably watch the rest of the season in hopes that the plot gets way, way less muddied too. Because right now I feel like things are just confusing and I have no idea what people are doing.
I watched the last 2 episodes last night. I'm enjoying the ride so far... a bit confusing as to what is happening and why but it's not like the first season was much better in that respect. I think we'll see a lot of story progress over the next 2-3 episodes setting up a good finish. That gun fight was a bit of a stretch though... Closet gay biker cop with the head shot, her chasing the suburban down on foot, civilians being caught in the crossfire... those cops would be in major trouble for a cluster like that.
Perhaps both? VV has never been a particularly impressive dramatic actor imo. Zero range or depth as an actor.
I think the whole season would be saved if VV just asks Velcoro if he motor-boated Ani. "Come on you old motor-boating SOB you!"
Go back and read some of the dialogue from last season. There was a ton of seriously pretentious crap that was saved by amazing acting performances. Vince Vaughn just does not have that ability, and the show obviously misses Fukunaga.
Relax and be patient guys, season 1 should have taught you this. Stop nitpicking everything and just ride.
You're correct. The acting made it all work. However...they also knew when to sprinkle in some humor from Marty and such to keep it from becoming stale. There was actual balance with the dialogue, which is what this season is lacking.
And you bought in 100% to MM as the main hero, and yet an ******* (edit: I don't mean like a jerk, but more like a curmudgeon type ass who's negative about everything for good reason). A lot of the show was about his personal transformation and his evolving relationship with WH, which made up for leaving a lot of the mystery unresolved. This season, it's all about the mystery bc the characters (mainly VV and RM) can't deliver the script. Every time VV goes into a soliloquy I start to fall asleep.
Did you guys ever see a 1998 indie film called Clay Pigeons? Vince doesn't show up until about half way through the movie but he plays a terrific psychopath. http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0118863/fullcredits?ref_=tt_ov_st_sm
Biggest issue im having isn't acting but the damn state itself! Season 1 felt grim and grungy, had horror and a real monster waiting. This seems like a Dirty Harry movie now...
