I hope you guys don't think I'm hating on Slick Rick with my earlier post. He's definitely done some good stuff. It's just that the lack of "cred" that makes him underrated is the same reason he coldn't quite get away with a song like "I Can." Not in the popular public eye anyway. That's what I meant by posting that. Not that he couldn't make a song like "I Can," but that he doesn't quite have the level of popularity/appreciation to do it without people developing misconceptions about his overall style.

Depends really. I'll go almost anywhere to play. Right now I'm mostly at the 24 in Meyerland due to my schedule. I live in the SW part of Houston so I try to hit up the spots w/o driving too far. What about yourself?

Also there was a thread talking about the music scene here in Houston. There are a couple of really good hip hop acts that don't get any publicity unless you are pretty much in the "hip hop community" down here. If anyone gets a chance to check out VG Skills and K-otix, they should. Beat Farm (beatfarm.net) produces tracks for some of these guys and does a really good job.

Defining "hip-hop" as a culture, a way of life, and as someone living it... Definitely NAS.

Best. Lyricist. Out. -since KRS-ONE or Rakim-

Best Rapper? Eminem.... as "rap" goes - lyrics are definitely clever, but he's a "combined effort" regardless of all the 8 Mile folklore... he's tight 'n' all, but sometimes a bit whack all in all...

NAS is the current embodiement of all that is hip-hop from day one.

p.s. - you can find out about "Mase" at http://www.creflodollarministries.org I think.

My whole point is that the song I can is based on Slick Rick's style. He In fact set the precedent for that kind of song.[ie. Hey Young World, Children's Story, etc.] That's all.

Sorry I haven't read the whole thread yet so i don't know if any body mentioned him... but i doubt it. Anybody who likes real hip hop and not all of the sellout **** today should definitely check out J-Live. Best lyricist I've ever heard. Anyways I voted for Nas. I think he's the best storyteller ever in the history of rap.

p.s. I think it was pgabriel that mentioned Redman but I'm not sure. I think he's great. A lot of people probably just listen to a few songs and think all he does is rap about funny stuff and weed... but he's actually got really good lyrical skills. If you don't believe me get Malpractice. Whole CD is classic.

Are you looking for his songs in particular or songs that he's on?

The whole Blackstarr album, Ms. Fat Booty, Mathmatics, Umi Says, Universal Magnetic (soundbombing II), The Questions (Like water for Chocolate-Common), Body Rock (Lyrcist Lounge vol 1, I think) I'll think of some more later.

Also Mase has a book out but I cant think of the name of it.

Theres another message board I'm a member of called http://www.trickology.com/thebored for anyone that wants to talk hiphop all the time. Its a pretty good site (not as good as this one though.:D )

Nas, Mos Def, and Talib are all trailing 50 Cent. That is some sad sh*t.

    I'd rather go with:

    guru
    q-tip
    all the dudes from:
    blackalicious
    black eyed peas
    jurassic 5
    ugly duckling
    the roots
    dilated peoples
    company flow
    kool keith

they are just on another level then most of the mentioned
mainstream bs artist every kid is liking. I will never like music
that also 7 year old kids will dig.

    peace.
