Troy Daniels is signed through 2016 with the Bobcats. No way do they trade for him. http://www.spotrac.com/nba/charlotte-hornets/troy-daniels Also Daniels and jones will not get you a point guard of the caliber of what you listed above
So 1st guy thinks TD played for us last year and is a FA...? 2nd guy thinks the Hornets are still the Bobcats...? Clutchfans is losing it... Need Morey to make some moves and sharpen us up!
Read the red again. He made an impact in Phily but Philly sucks and making an impact there is just a step ahead making an impact in the D League. He did nothing here. Canaan made a bigger impact in Philly. Neither did anything here. You can't count Philly. I mean if you want to count Philly than just look at his plus and mnus and look at it here in Houston. For all the dunks he still shot 29% in Philly. Yeah a lot of players improved there 3 point shooting but a lot did not. People are mesmerized by all the dunks but it's not like all his amazing dunks translated in win wins for Philly. His impact didn't effect wins and losses. I don't care how incredible ur dunks are if your team still loses than you are a loser. Agreed there are exceptions but his plus and minus sucked in Philly and Houston.
And you're the guy who couldn't follow the conversation and figure out that he was talking about McDaniels.
If we had his bird rights I would let Brew walk and keep McDaniels. But since we have to dip into the MLE to sign him to any realistic amount, I'd rather let him walk and focus on PG and PF. At SF we're rocking Ariza, Brewer and unless a trade happens K-Pap. We just drafted Dekker. Do we really need him right now, as promising as he is as a prospect? I'm not so sure. I feel like we have other priorities and so does he (minutes, money).
The rockets can use their depth at SF to acquire a PG. There aren't any great free agent PG options out there so unless the Rockets think they can find a more talented high up side player than McDaniels with the MLE they are better off signing him and then moving him, Brewer, Dekker and/or Kostas to upgrade other areas.
A couple of things. In order to become a talented and serviceable player in the NBA you do not need to develop a three pointer contrary to popular opinion. Whether KJ develops a solid three or not I think he still has decent chance to become a solid player in the league. KJ in my opinion has potential to become a better all around defender than Johnson simply because his length and is leagues better defensively than Isaiah Canaan who has been in the league for two seasons. The reason KJ is shown a lot of interest is not because of his offensive ability. He is not known just for his dunks. Dunks are highlight plays for people who don't really delve into what actually is important. KJ is a player who will go after every ball and sprint 100 percent of the time. He will not give up on a play defensively. He is Tayshaun Prince blocking Reggie Miller in the playoffs. He's Trevor Ariza stealing crucial passes in conference and NBA finals. KJ is a guy who has an immense amount of athleticism but actually knows how to use it. But you know what? Let's talk about KJ's offensive upside anyways, and let's throw Corey Brewer into the mix since he just got paid. Here's something from basketball reference: (using sixers KJ and sixers Canaan) KJ shot a somewhat respectable 46% from on 2FG attempts and 57% from 0-3 feet away Isaiah shot 40% on both 2FG attempts and 0-3 feet away. Johnson was 39% on 2FG attempts and 46% from 0-3 feet away. Brewer was 50% on 2FG attempts and 65% from 0-3 feet away Yes, Canaan is the better three point shooter than KJ, but he is definitely not a better defender or finisher at the rim. So yeah, Canaan is better than KJ offensively, but KJ is better than Canaan defensively. Sixers KJ went a record 12-41 and Sixers Canaan went a record 6-22. I don't think that reflects much on the player himself but more so the team and how terrible it was and still is. You can probably put Motiejunas on the team and they still don't win 20 games. It was terrible so using the Sixers record as a gauge isn't a good way to value KJ nor Canaan. Carmelo Anthony couldn't help get the Knicks 16 wins before the all-star break. Being on a loser team does not make you a loser. So, KJ has shown to be a better finisher from the percentages I posted and also a better threat from outside from the ones I'm about to show. Sixers KJ is 34% from 16 feet to the 3 and 29% from the three Johnson is 0% from 16 feet to the 3 (very low/almost non-existent frequency) and 24% from the three. Brewer is 37% from 16 feet to the 3 and 28% from the three. KJ is a better catch and shooter from deep than Nick. (Also, I just noticed that KJ has never been on the floor at the same time together with either Dwight or Harden as team mates while Nick has.) Catch and shoot per stats.nba.com KJ's 67% 2FG and 32% 3FG (very low/almost non-existent frequency on 2FG) Nick's 50% 2FG and 21% 3FG Brewer's 30% 2FG and 27% 3FG The thing is why are we comparing their outside game? Both are horrible. It's like trying to say Lawson is better than Lillard because he's a better defender. What? Dude, they both suck at defense lol. Point is these guys suck at shooting from distance so they need other redeemable qualities. KJ is a better finisher than Johnson, and he has also shown to be a better free throw shooter than Johnson. KJ hits 76% from the line. Johnson goes 68%. That 8 percent could be a deal breaker. Imagine last year's Dwight in the playoffs shooting 70 percent instead of 62 percent. Probably win game 1. I wish I could find stats to compare each other defensively, but I don't know where to go for that. I tried nba.stats.com for that but after doing research it shows Kawhi to be a very average NBA defender and Ariza to be an absolutely terrible NBA defender. I guess I can just list draft express measurements, but that doesn't really say much.
First I'm not of the schhool I don't want KJ or I think KJn the "KJ Sucks" side. Not even close. Actually haven't heard anyone on that side. I am on the don't overpay for unproven talent. You got to show me and KJ hasn't shown me that he is a good straight up defender. Not saying he can't be but he just isn't there yet. I don't need stats to tell me that. Just got to see it on the floor. You are the one comparing their outside games. I'm just watching what he is. And he is an amazing athlete who hasn't developed his defensive game yet. He is a good finisher great dunker and I would say he even has some ability to attack the basket on the drive with the ball. But he is very raw. He is not a developed. Can he be? Sure but you don't want to overpay for potential. That's my thought. The other thought is where are the minutes. I just don't see him beating out brewer. I will admit to being wrong if I am. But Brewer is one of the best downhill scorers in the league and a good defender right now. And we used a decent draft pick on Dekker who can play the 2,3 and 4. Again I like KJ a lot but 2 mil sounds about right to me. If someone wants to overpay him then let them.
The amount of time KJ spent with the coaching staff and players after the trade and until the exit interview had to have given them a fair appraisal of the man's basketball worth. Philly? That was so yesterday. But what he did 'today' that we as fans never saw is how DM the GM is valuing his retention.
I emphatically think he is every bit as good of a defender as Nick Johnson. I love Nick's defense but KJ did it for over half a season at a very high level in Philly. I'm shocked that you would knock his defense. He is an outstanding shot blocker, probably the best in the NBA at 6'6" or less. He averages about 2 blocks per 36 minutes. He was averaging almost a 1.5 a game in Philly when he was only playing 25 minutes a game. That is pretty damn amazing for a 6'6" player. Here are some quotes in some articles about McDaniels defense. http://bleacherreport.com/articles/...cdaniels-is-the-nbas-next-defensive-superstar http://www.libertyballers.com/the-l...els-showcasing-incredible-defensive-potential http://www.si.com/nba/2014/12/09/kj-mcdaniels-76ers-shot-blocking-rookie And what exactly would make me think that RH Jefferson is a better prospect? KJ has already proven that he can do things in the NBA at an elite level on defense. Jefferson might prove to be better but nothing suggests that he will be better. Like KJ he can't shoot 3 pointers only hitting 20% in college while KJ hit 29% from 3 in the pros.
Get more versatile players like stuckey. If you can't shoot ..... How do you play with Harden/Howard? They need space. McDaniels has upside, but don't miss the chance to resign Smith or another solid piece like Stuckey by giving all the MLE to McDaniels
Like it or not he didn't prove enough to McHale to give him any significant minutes in the playoffs. Nick got more playing time. That is as close as today as you can get. I think a lot of people are amazed by his athleticism and high flying dunks and blocks. I am too. But not enough to give him more than half the MLE. If someone wants to overpay good for them. I just hope it's not us.
He was a rookie and Nick Johnson was borderline terrible in the playoffs. KJ has mad potential, he's worth a close look if the price is right. Stuckey tops out as a no-defense shooter who's either at his peak (as a slightly above replacement player) or declining.
Not to poke holes in your "KJ-doesn't-impress-me-much" argument, but he did sustain a non-displaced elbow fracture right before the playoffs, so he wouldn't have even been given garbage time. And McHale certainly wasn't going to play KJ in front of his boys Brew and Trevor. If some sort of deal occurs that clears out Ariza (not that I want him to go, but we have to be realistic; this is Morey we're talking about and Ariza's play and contract have a lot of value), then KJ will get his chance to play. Or KJ will be the player who goes in December as part of a trade. "If, or, if or" I guess. But this isn't a guy you just let walk. 2nd year player. He'll only improve.
We, meaning the Rockets only, cannot overpay for KJ. He is locked in for us at slightly above the QO, because of his deal with philly. We can only match an offer sheet, and any offer sheet cannot exceed 5m/y for years 1-2, so his impact on next years FA class wouldn't be all that hindering. It should be an easy match for Houston, but I very seriously doubt anyone throws cash at him.
Let's not judge talent by whether or not mchale plays them lol. Mchale also left Capela on the bench forever and kept playing Dorsey, ONLY because of injury. Not because he saw talent. Next, KJ broke his wrist I believe the last game of the season. At 22, he's already a better defender than Corey Brewer is. Brewer's defense consists of gambling and playing recklessly. Brewer is also a pretty poor shooter from distance, yet we resigned him to 8 million per season and no one seemed to be bothered by that. KJ getting 5 million would be a steal, considering he's much younger and more athletic. Let's also not overrate Josh Smith. Long term, the rockets should want KJ over smith. We could still very well make a trade for a shooter/scorer even with using the MLE on KJ.
