Unless CD has completely BS'd us about the luxury tax, I don't know if I see Rice being moved in a deal, unless said deal returned us another expiring contract (Wesley Person, for example).

But of course I wouldn't rule out a deal of some kind.

brando, FYI, duplicating posts like yours in this thread and verse's Griffin thread is frowned upon because it unnecessarily takes up server space. Please keep that in mind in the future; thanks. :)

I have to agree that not coming out and saying we're not matching probably means we're keeping the door open for possible trades, however slight. But I'm guessing the chances of something happening that affects Posey's signing are probably around 5%.

    Agreed,

Considering we just picked up two vets for half of what we would have to pay Posey..I find it very unlikely that we match. I certainly wouldnt mind if they prove me wrong tho..I liked Posey

I certainly cant argue with the price for AG..we should get some nice production for the price.

oh, and actually he posted that in three threads now..verse's,this one, and the sticky. Almost as bad as free posts.

At a bare minimun, Adrian Griffin was showing Glen Rice some respect. Perhaps on a larger scale, he respects Rice's past shooting accomplishments. In any event, I feel he is being respectful and that's another very admirable quality he brings to the team. Or did you not notice how refreshing Yao Ming's humility is? ;)

With all the pro and con being mentioned about Posey, I tried to remain on the sidelines. With only a handful of exceptions, few of us at CC know as well as CD what kind of offers have been fielded for Rice and his expiring contract. Surely some of the offers included SF's. IMO, holding the line on Posey and persuing good values (Pike, AGriff) was an excellent strategy. Especially in light of what may happen with Rice...whether pre-season, trade deadline or clearing distance from the LT for next summer.

I also found it interesting that Piatkowki and Griffin both wanted to come to the Rockets although both had extremely diverse backgrounds - Sterling vs Cuban, WC cellar dweller vs WC Top Tier team.

I thought CD was in Atlanta on some "top secret" mission?

He wanted to esape the Houston heat and per CD logic, Atlanta was the best place to go.

So was the rest of the MLE money spent on AG? Since we are over the cap, I assume that is where the money to sign him came from.

So, we'll probably sign him to a 2 year deal worth $1.5mm...

    ERGO,

Pike salary + AG salary < Posey's Griz Salary

    $2.45mm + $.688mm < $5.5mm

I wish we would have been equally frugal with Rice, MoT, Mooch's contracts...
    [/QUOTE]

    Except this isn't quite accurate.

Next year Posey's would equal 4.9 mi.
Next year Pike and AG will combine for 3.1 mil.
Hawkins or another non 5 year vet min should be like .4-.5 mil

Personally, I'd have rather spent the 2.2 extra mil (or maybe like4 extra IF lux tax is in play) for the 26 year old Posey + Hawkins (or another min player) than two undersized 3s that include a 32 year old shooting specialist and a 29 year old defensive specialist. I'd had gone with the much younger and more well rounded player (Posey) even though the obligation is an extra year and a half.

I don't think this was the wisest short term or long term way to cut 2.2 million in total team salary we could have pursued.

I do believe some of our bad prior contracts lead to this--but here is the one case where another team felt our guy was worth this much and this is not the time to pay for prior mistakes. Misjudging this situation (not matching Posey) does not make up for misjudging (paying over market value for guys with out comparable options elsewhere) previous situations.

It's 5:09 p.m. -- did we let Posey go or did we match?

Well....I think we let him go. The deadline has passed. Farewell Posey.

It takes a while before a decision like that becomes known.

I would hold off judgement until that if I were you...

Still hoping that Rice is somehow gone and we match.

We really have two options if we didn't match:

    a) CD really WANTED to match and tried until the last second.
    b) Not telling until the deadline expired was just a PR move.

Here's hoping that B isn't true. It would suck royally.

As it's looking, it seems that they want (or wanted) to keep Posey. So much for all you guys telling us how "expendable" he was.

    shame on you!

OH MY GAWD! Ok, I know this is just probably a last minute pide dream attempt of mine, but I just noticed that

Miami signs John Wallace and Loren Woods.

Do I even DARE dream that Rice got traded for Brian Grant and we matched the Grizzlies offer?

Yeah, pipe dream I know. But it sure looks like Grant is gone, though probably not to us.

I posted this trade in the thread that was closed. It still makes sense to me though.

    Houston sends Cato/Taylor/Mobley to Memphis.

    Memphis sends Person/Battier/Swift/Knight to Houston.

Memphis gets the size up front that they desire. They also get assurances that we won't match Posey's offer.

We fill our needs for a starting SF (Battier), a replacement for Mobley at SG (Person), depth (Knight/Swift), & cap relief at the end of the year (Person/Knight). This trade also puts us in position to acquire a FA or two next year. To replace Cato, we could sign Stepania or Jelani McCoy to play the 17 or less mpg that he would play. Our new lineup could be:

    C: Ming/Stepania
    PF: Griffin/Swift/T-Mo
    SF: Battier/Rice/Nachbar
    SG: Person/Piatkowski
    PG: Francis/Knight/Moochie (IL)

It would be nice if they accepted. I would even add a future 2nd round draft pick for them.

By the way...you do know that we signed Adrian Griffin yesterday.

    Francis/Knight/Norris
    Person/Piatkowski/Hawkins
    Battier/AGriffin/Rice/Nachbar
    EGriffin/Swift/Morris
    Yao/anybody

    Williams 32/Watson 17/Bell
    Mobley 41/Dickerson/Jones
    Posey 30/Miller 33/Humphrey/Owens/Smith
    Gasol 36/Taylor 21/Archibald
    Wright 28/Cato 17/Trybanski

    Isn't it more like this:

This is your brain: A. Griffin

This is your brain on drugs: E. Griffin
