Man, what a great bump. Dallas keeps plummeting farther and farther. Great thread to re-read.

Is there still any doubt now that Cuban's nothing without Dirk? When asked to truly built a team, he spent 4 years to get Chandler Parsons and Wes Mathews, one with nagging injuries and FA next year, the other already devastatingly injured.

the mavericks were crap as an organization and team before he came there. he completely turned it around.

the clippers just suckered the mavericks, but i wouldn't blame Cuban for the D'Andre debacle.

If Cuban gets rid of Dirk a Mavs legend the way Le$ Alexander got rid of Dream, a Houston and Rockets legend, then we can compare the two

What Le$ did to dream was downright filthy. I believe Cuban will let Dirk retire a Mav

With Cuban, we would have any Fegan client we would want...

    and scrubs.

    http://grantland.com/the-triangle/sorting-out-the-deandre-jordan-carnival/

"This is not a good day for Dan Fegan, Jordan’s agent. On draft night, the Mavericks selected Satnam Singh with the 52nd pick — a massive guy who no one thinks can play in the NBA. Fegan’s agency represents Singh. The league rolled its eyes — another Cuban-Fegan job. The two men are tight, and there’s nothing wrong with that. Cuban has signed a pile of Fegan clients, and he made a run at another one, Dwight Howard, two summers ago."

You don't think Cuban's relationship with Fegan had anything to do with this? Or Cuban hyping Chandler as a star and star recruiter?

DAJ would have never even looked towards Dallas without the Cuban-Fegan thing. I mean, they're not a good team, are old, have been poorly managed for years, and couldn't even pay him as much as LAC.

I think the duping of themselves (and temporary duping of Deandre) that DAJ would ever join the Mavs in that situation is entirely on Cuban/Donnie.

In this particular case, no I guess you can't blame Cuban.

However... the whole strategy to rebuild around Dirk in the way they have tried after they won the title is absolutely in question along with his other GM responsibilities.

Year after Year after Year gutting the roster in order to have a shot at guys that aren't really 1st rate superstars who end up spurning the Mavs, and leaving Cuban with the task of piecing together scrap parts in order to just try and make the playoffs.

Then you add on top of that his inability to produce, or keep anything resembling a trade asset. Draft picks are non-existence, and obviously not valued in their organization. Young players.... when is the last time they have drafted and developed a young player worth anything? Then the few times they have, do they even keep those guys?

Is Cuban a good owner??... I think so.

Is Cuban a good GM.... IMO, no... he hasn't been in a really long time.

In the modern NBA, the draft, young players, and other asset collection is half of your job because when your back is against the wall and things don't work out for you with superstars, injuries, etc. You need those tools to either deal or re-tool. He's botched this area, and in turn that's about half of his duties as a GM.

Also the Chandler Parsons signing was a personal vendetta against Morey and the Rockets. It also was about taking care of his buddy Dan Fegan. You need to be able to take off points for making GM decisions based on friendships and making things personal. When the line is blurred between professional and personal, its time to question whether they are the right person for the job.

The Fegan-Cuban relationship is key here, being that it's overrated.

Considering all his talk about chemistry and continuity, I don't think there's been a more incongruent owner in the league

    eff Cuban and eff Fegan

And obviously with Cuban, you aren't just getting an owner like Les, but an owner/GM hybrid. I'll take Les over Cuban anyday.

Cuban likes to interfere in his GM's work, and that's the major reason why Gersson Rosas suddenly became the GM of Mavs and soon resigned and went back to Rockets in summer of 2013 .
A great owner is the one who can wisely control the team instead of trying to get involved in everything.
