How does this make sense for Portland?? Why would they facilitate a deal like this instead of letting him walk to an impotent Lakers team?

Don't get me wrong I would love this deal but I can't imagine anyone would go for it

We could use the room exception to resign Smith without using cap space. It would actually be slightly higher than what we could offer now......$2.8 vs $2. Or you can reverse it and use the RE to sign KJ and sign Smith with cap space.

portland knows they wont win for the next couple of years. Why let LMA walk for nothing when you could get some prospects/other assets

Thanks cyber and just curios I know how you feel about Rubio but any chance we contact minny about Rubio? They way everybody is getting paid the contract he is on will be a very very cheap deal in the future. Is he a option among the options we have?

Ian Eagle reporting that the Nets and Deron Williams might part ways.

Would they really consider the stretch provision to avoid the luxury tax?

The room exception is if you use cap space you could a mini mid level exception, correct? If you don't use cap space to sign players, then you get the Full Mid Level exception?

Hell...if he's not coming here I'd rather him go east....but if LA keeps him out of our division, I'm cool with that, I suppose.

How much capspace will la have after maxing lma? Because mil is about to dro a big offer to rolo. We have 16 in capspace and he will be our best choice. Maybe we can do morrey a solid ( or the spurs).

That's Portland's way of saying we aren't helping LMA facilitate a SnT that brings back actual salary. They are filling holes on the roster with options that will. E bargains under the larger cap.

Hence the "other pieces part". Portland would end up with the completely non-guaranteed contracts of Haywood and Papanikolaou, and then a few of our young players/assets.

If you want something more specific:

    HOU In: LMA
    CLE In: Brewer
POR In: Haywood, Papanikolaou, TJones, rights to Montrezl Harrell, HOU 2016 1st

LAL with Supermax Kobe, Max LMA and Lopez (at the rate that the market is showing right now) and a handful of rooks is not a better situation than Portland in the next couple of years. Just my opinion.

Don't think LA goes to LA unless Cousins goes too. Apparently Lopez would do in a pinch so what do I know?

Still feel he's a lock for the Spurs.

LA will have about 7.5 MM in cap space after signing someone to a max level deal starting at 18.8MM.

Yes, something like that. If you use cap space, you lose the non-taxpayer MLE, taxpayer MLE, and Bi-Annual exception. You do however get the "room exception", which can be a contract up to 2 years with a starting salary of $2.8 million.

Agree the biggest unkown is if Kobe will retire next summer (or take a tiny deal) and that opens up another max contract spot where they would go after big FAs again (like Durant, etc). If I'm LA, that's what I'm selling at least.
