hunter played in a pretty weak conference and competition wasn't exactly too great. he's strictly a shooter and needs others to create for him. not even close Dekker>Hunter

A lot of the posts here are kinda hyperbolic. Before this year rjhunter % were much better and he can play or learn to play defence because he has the physical tools.
i still think the chucking cant be coached out of him and would take dekker over him 10/10 but the kid can still be servicable in the nba. He isnt no3noD. And thats coming from someone who campaigned against picking him in two different teams forums lol.

    RJ Hunter stats last year:
    48.8% FG % on 2's, 30.5% on 3's
    Dekker:
    63.9% on 2's, 33.1% on 3's

I know RJ has a great range, but are we so sure that he's even a better shooter than Dekker in the first place? (and this is ignoring all other parts of their game)

Morey said that if Dekker were off the board, a guard was next on his list. There were plenty of guards available so that statement doesn't really narrow it down, but it does show that Morey valued Dekker over any of them. I think Dekker is an incredibly safe pick and perhaps Morey feels no pressure to swing for the fences anymore.

This is a case of someone just listening to what the talking heads are saying.

First, lets look at the statistics:

    THREE POINT SHOOTING
RJ Hunter shot 30% from 3's last season. Now, in fairness his second year, he shot 39%. However, last year he shot 250+ times from 3 and did not make close to an acceptable amount. Overall in his college career he shot 35% from behind the arc.

Sam Dekker in the other hand made 33% of his 3's last season, and for his career in college he shot 35% from behind the arc.

RJ Hunter took a higher volume of 3's than Dekker, but Sam played in a far more competitive conference.

So why all the RJ Hunter hype? Well scouts love his shooting potential and fundamentals. It should be said, that scouts also believe that Dekker can become a good three point shooter as well. Sam tends to let his off hand get in the way at times, and he leans back too much when he is tired.

So, on 3 point shots, at BEST there is a slight advantage to RJ Hunter.... until you consider that Dekker is 4 inches taller than Hunter and is easier to shoot over the top.

    ADVANTAGE: PUSH

    TWO POINT SHOOTING

    As for 2 point shots?

Not even close, Dekker was the second best two point shooter in the entire draft. He shot 64% from inside the arc, which is usually reserved for dominant post players and guys that only dunk. That IS elite shooting. Hunter, shot a mediocre 48% on two point shots.

    Advantage: DEKKER

    FREE THROW SHOOTING

Hunter is a very good free throw shooter, at 87% and Dekker is a mediocre 71% from the line. Further, Hunter goes to the line at a far higher rate than Dekker. Some of the disparity in attempts can be linked to Hunter dominating the ball and the style of play his team had. Further, Dekker was in a very controlled half court offense under Bo Ryan which limited his touches and trips to the line.

    ADVANTAGE: HUNTER

What about the rest of their games? Well Dekker is a vastly superior defender capable of defending almost all SF and PF and even some SG's. Hunter is able to guard 2's and some 3's.
Offensively Dekker is capable of playing off the ball very well. He excells coming off of screens and hitting open shots when not guarded. This skill will be huge with Harden and Howard demanding attention.

Simply stated, Dekker can do more things, has better size, has played a higher level of competition and is a superior prospect.

Does that mean Hunter won't be a better pro? Probably not, but it certainly is possible that Hunter turns into an elite shooter. Still, at this point that is far from certain and there is a reason Hunter fell to where he did.

that's the reason. he's flashy because if his range, but a further look show no substance.

he can shoot from anywhere at a 28% clip!!! lol.

Dekker is a bigger, better athlete who may have superior basketball skills to Hunter's. Dekker has more tools in his toolbox.

Hunter will be a good player. Not as versatile as Dekker but his shooting percentage took a dip last season because he became a focal point of opposing teams. Does not mean Hunter cannot be a great 3 point specialist in the NBA.

In fact, Morey should trade for him, and Terry Rozier. They should be easier and cheaper to acquire than Eric Bledsoe, or LOL, LaMarcus Aldridge. Celtics need big men and Rockets are deep at those positions.
