Paxton's perceptions of legality are demonstrably flawed as his own indictment clock is ticking down...

Judge expands scope of Paxton investigation
    By Lauren McGaughy

AUSTIN - A Collin County judge has expanded the probe into Attorney General Ken Paxton's alleged securities violations, by widening the scope of possible offenses under investigation by two special prosecutors.

In late April, Judge Scott Becker appointed Houston criminal defense attorneys Brian Wice and Kent Schaffer as special prosecutors to assist in the "investigation and, if warranted, the prosecution of Ken Paxton for the securities law complaints currently under investigation by the Texas Rangers."

In an amended order issued May 20, however, it was expanded to "any and all offenses arising out of Ken Paxton's alleged violations of the Texas Securities Act."

"I requested the scope of our investigation be expanded because of things that were uncovered in the course of the investigation," Schaffer told the Chronicle Thursday. "We wanted to make sure the scope of our investigation was not limited by the original order. We were simply going where the evidence took us."

Schaffer would not comment further on what avenue the investigation could take; Wice declined comment.

Other offenses related to a violation of state securities laws could be making false statements, engaging in deceptive practices and fraud, said Sandra Guerra Thompson, director of the Criminal Justice Institute at the University of Houston Law Center.

"There's no reason that the investigation should not be expanded if it's seen as necessary," Thompson said.

A year ago, Paxton admitted to repeatedly violating state securities laws by soliciting clients for his friend Frederick "Fritz" Mowery's investment firm without being properly registered with the state. He was fined $1,000 and reprimanded.

A subsequent criminal complaint was filed with the Travis County District Attorney's office, which assigned the case to Dallas and Collin counties, where Paxton was working at the time.

In April, after a local grand jury signaled its intent to investigate the matter without his involvement, Collin County District Attorney Greg Willis recused himself and referred the case to the Texas Rangers for investigation. Willis and Paxton have been friends for three decades and have been involved in numerous business ventures together.

Not treating churches like commercial or political rivals is probably what the Founders were shooting for. Religious civil wars and papal/clerical corruption were probably the biggest themes in their history lectures growing up, as opposed to Nazis, commies and slavery.

In 6 months it won't even be a topic, people will move on to the next created political crisis. Sort of like the Ebola story, huge! -> to not a peep.

Yup - civil rights have never been subject to the people's will, and rightfully so.

Switch "gay marriage" for "interracial marriage" and you basically just go to the same world 50 years ago. Churches fought it, politicians railed against it, and ignorant morons said the people should decide. The courts stepped in and decided and we're all the better for it.

Commodore, I assume you were also opposed to this and feel that interracial couples should not have been allowed to marry until the voters allowed it?

People rag on Islam for its backwardness yet you see millions of right wing nuts that are homophobic. Who cares if they wanna get married? How does it affect you?

It seems completely ridiculous to me that people are actually angry about this.

Seriously, people need to get a grip on reality. I have never been affected by two people getting married, regardless of who they were. This definitely won't change that.

This is what happens when you don't force businesses to cater to everyone.

I wouldn't expect an honest answer from him.

If you think about it, how much longer could segregation have gone on if left to the will of the people? It would have been decades more, especially in the south.

Thankfully US progress in these matters comes from the judiciary and not from periodic military coups to oust religious zealots from power, as has been the case in post-Ottoman Turkey.

Islamic Sharia law and Christian Conservative law are similar expressions of imposed religious bigotry over freedom and civil rights.

I don't think anyone has ever shown the civil justification for limiting same sex marriage, how it harms anyone outside of their religious sensibilities.

Except that people's hands don't get chopped off for theft, that people don't get killed for leaving Christianity, that adulterers don't get stoned and that blasphemy is not punished severely.

Other than that and a few other major differences, yeah, I guess you could call them similar...

yeah, that what I said, "similar expressions of religious bigotry" in that they assume a supremacy of a selected religious doctrine over freedom of expression and civil rights; not that state sanctioned torture isn't a worse expression relatively.

The point was the irony of the vilification of Islamic fundamentalism by Christian fundamentalism when they are both equally wrongheaded and discriminatory.

That is what happens when you don't force businesses to cater to everyone 80 years ago...

    This is what happens now.

I will say that has a lot to do with majority of the Christian population being subjects to secular governments. Remember, there was a time when majority of the Christian world was under theocratic rule and apostates, blasphemers, adulterers etc received corporal punishment.
