If the Texans have the first pick in the draft and he does not play next season, would you select him? At what point would you select him?
1. And that makes it okay? I should hope that if someone leaves during a final, they fail the class. 2. Sure, but I wouldn't be surprised if I got kicked off the team either. 3. Yes it does. And look at what happened to the old Fab Five team at Michigan - completely stripped of all awards and recognition. Also, I went to school with guys like Quentin Jammer, Mike Williams, and Leonard Davis. They were all living in normal lives in Jester or off Riverside, driving plain cars under after they graduated. The Longhorns run a very clean program, and don't resort to sleazy tactics by boosters to get recruits. We're Texas. 4. So it's okay to break the law, because "everyone else does it?" 5. Probably too busy to give his story, right?
Clarett simply has no respect for the game, nor does he have any idea of how little he has accomplished. Allen was one of the best college players of all time. Allen was a Hall of Fame running back in the NFL. Clarett has yet to complete one full season of college football (due to injury). He has accomplished nothing. His accomplishments and his ego are not in alignment. Snubbing Marcus Allen is classless. It's telling Marcus Allen, one of the greatest ever, that his time isn't as important as that of Clarett. This type of arrogant, egotistical attitude is why many fans are very sour on the modern athlete. Accomplish something first, then you can talk the talk.
Yeah you're right, the people who actually make money off his performance have no responsability in this. I never said he didn't, but it just amazes me that in all this mess you never here the coaches name or the adminstrators who clean up off of free labor. And again, if a professor offered basically a free pass in college, a dealership let you have a loaded car, would you turn it down, I think not.
See this is just stupid, Lawrence Phillips drug his girlfriend down a flight of stairs. There's a big difference. And what did Tom Osberne get for recruiting numerous questionable student athletes, a seat in the U.S. Congress.
I had no idea that's the rule you were referring to, you never mentioned. So let's say Maurice challenges that rule, how does that affect your life, but more importantly what bad example is he setting by maximizing his earning ability.
1. It's written in the class syllabus anyone who was having problems could ask for help 2. Taking money from a friend is not an NCAA violation unless that friend is a booster 3. So you are saying OSU and Duke are dirty programs compared to Texas. Yeah right. 4. It's not ok but I won't criticize him for something most people have done. Again even apolice man was quoted in saying inteh Columbus paper that they won't pursue it. he had not filed insurance papers, if he had done that then it would have been a more serious offense. 5. You know his priority should be gettign things straight with the NCAA and Ohio State before he worries about meeting with other players.
Hasn't the same thing been said about 80% of the young athletes (included teh Franchise). He's 19 years old. Most of the guys coming out of college are 20-22 and they have no respect for the game or the other players.
Yawn, another misrepresentation set forth by the King of Exaggeration, pgabriel. Clarett rushed the ball 23 times in the Fiesta Bowl for a grand total of 47 yards. A pathetic performance. Football is a team sport. Last I checked, Maurice Clarett didn't receive the championship, Ohio State did.... and if you knew anything about college football, you would know that their defense was what carried them. You will stop at nothing to defend arrogant, classless, egotistical athletes, won't you, pgabriel? I wonder why....
Can you name any other athlete I've defended for doing something arrogant, or is that just another one of your ignorant assumptions? And talk about exaggerations, only an idiot would claim Clarrett had little to do with Ohio State's success last season to help make their point.
I was comparing the 2 because MC is a talented college RB who might let his attitude keep him from being a great NFL RB...like Lawrence did.
OOC, what rule did you think I was talking about? There are rules and regulations in place that have helped the NFL become the most successful sports league, period. The aforementioned rule is one of them. Do I want to watch a 19yr old kid playing a man's game on Sunday? See, the NFL understands that playing in the league requires more than athletic abilities. You have to be mentally mature, not to mention they don't want to lower the least common denominator of playing ability on the field. So, if he successfully overturns this rule, it does affect me. I wait all year for the NFL to return. I love the game. I don't want to see a selfish, disrespectful punk to try and change things because he thinks he's special and doesn't want to follow the rules that every single NFL player ahead of him has followed since 1990.
Knowing that I could lose my eligibility and get my school in trouble, no I wouldn't. For argument's sake, let's say I did take those things. One thing I wouldn't do is file a police claim regarding the car that was "loaned" to me as a "test drive" and claim $6000 worth of money and goods were stolen. Clarett easily ranks as one of the dumbest athletes of all time.
Taking care of business that affects his eligibilty next year should be his top priority. So, I agree with you on that one. However, his coach said that he didn't even call! As a matter of fact, when this story was reported, the coach hadn't even heard from MC for an explanation or ::gasp:: an apology.
You're reaching. You have no idea how Maurice Clarett would play on Sundays, and just in the case of any other knuckle head athlete, Michael Irvin, Randy Moss, Jeremy Shockey, if that player succeeds on the field, that team's fans will be happy to have him on their team.
I'm reaching when I state what MY opinion is? I'm reaching when I tell you how I feel about a situation? I'm stating MY opinion, not passing off inconsequential facts to support an argument. You've never heard me state that none of them are disrespectful. But, my memory escapes me, which one tried to challenge an NFL rule regarding draft eligibility? Furthermore, a players athletic ability is only part of the packge. His mental makeup and his overall maturity plays a big part in being able to make it in the league. I just wonder how many Vikings fans are happy that Randy Moss is on the team while he's hitting traffic cops with his car? I wonder how many Cowboys fans were proud that Irvin was a habitual trouble-maker and law-breaker. I can't recall what off the field antics Shockey has pulled. I'm sure there are fans, such as yourself, who don't care what an athlete brings to the community. Those same fans would love to have a Randy Moss or a Micheal Irvin, regardless of how bad it would make the team look. But for fans, such as myself, who feel outside the respect an athlete should have for their game, respect should be paid to people in general, and more importantly to the community that supports them. Afterall, my point all along, is about respect.
Again, If challenging the rule is your big deal, then I am not going to argue with you, because I feel nothing wrong with someone wanting to maximize their ability to make money, and if an owner wants to draft a 19 year old kid, so be it, who I am I to tell that owner not to draft him, or that player not to take the money. Only a person with a large ego would want someone not to try to make the most money they can just because they don't want to see someone that age playing professionally.
First of all, we don't know MC's side of the story. This isn't a Kobe Bryant rape case deal: it's not that big a deal. Athletes disrespect the past all the time. Sure I hate it, but some of them learn about it the hard way their first year of pro ball. The Longhorns program is clean, I agree. But even Cedric Benson rides in a luxury escalade (i think) wit the spinning blades. Things happen; you're 18-22, people are giving you stuff, you want to keep it. MC didn't call his coach because he knew he would be mad. Maybe he's waiting until coach's temper goes down a little before explaining himself. If Clarett wasn't on that OSU team, the Buckeyes definitely do not get to the Fiesta Bowl. And at the Fiesta Bowl, he does a lot more than rush. He caught that swing pass from Krenzel to set up the Maurice Hall TD. Whenever he's in the game, it opens the passing game up. He's a great athlete, and I agree there's no excuse for acting like an asswipe. Still, get out of their personal lives. Give him some privacy. This isn't shattering like he raped a girl. It ruins no ones lives. Get over it.
pgabriel. Are you not reading my posts? It's like you are doing selective reading. My beef is not about him 'making the most money [he] can.' It's about the lack of respect he has. As for the NFL rule, I agree, if a team wants to draft him, so be it. My beef there is that I don't want to see it. Why not? Not because I want to deny him his millions, but because I don't want to see an overly inexperienced football player out there on Sundays.
