I am trying to get back into tennis so I went to the Houstonian around 8:30PM with my dad to get some time in before they closed. About 30 minutes after we start, a tennis coach comes onto the court next to us and startes his lesson with some lady. Some time into the lesson, I noticed a couple of guys hanging out on the patio area checking out the lesson. I didn't pay any attention to them 'cause I assumed they were just checking out the lady (who was pretty hot for a mid 30 year old). The courts close at 10PM, so we start getting ready to leave before they turn off the lights. As we're packing up and the lesson on the next court is ending, they instructor yells at us, "So who won?" I didn't realize the guy was talking to us, but my dad figured it out and he kinda just threw up his hands (like I said, I'm a beginner so we didn't keep ANY kind of score). The guy says something like, "Yeah, I was watching you guys go at it a bit." He starts picking up balls and I take a step or two away as we start heading for home, then I turn to my dad and tell him that the guys looks like Clyde Drexler. My dad urges me to go ask, so I run up to him and try not to sound like an idiot. "Excuse me, sir? Has anybody told you that you look a lot like Clyde Drexler?" "Yeah, I get that sometimes, but he looks a lot older than me." As he keeps picking up balls, he turns and I get to see a profile of his face.. he's got that distinctive nose, you know? "If I was a betting man, I'd really say that you are Clyde Drexler." He chuckles a bit and walks back to the bench that separated our courts. "Yeah, I am Clyde Drexler." Basically, after that, the conversation went something like... "Where do you live?" "The neighborhood right across the jogging trail." "Oh, Stablewood? Yeah, I used to live on Stable Crest back in '95-'96." "Oh really?" "Yeah." "Is it true that you really dunked on a 12' goal back in Portland?" "That was back when I had hair..." And we just wrapped it up with me blabbering about how great it was to meet him and him saying your welcome. Uh, he's good at tennis and so was the lady he instructed. The guys on the patio probably saw him come in and came outside to check him out. er.. maybe both of them out. I'd say he's also a classy guy and has a nice sense of humor. Sorry, I know this is hard to believe w/o a pic. I know that's the rule around here, but I didn't bring a camera to the tennis court. Maybe next time..
cparka.. nice story.. that's something you won't forget for a long time... I've met him a few times and he was always a classy guy as well
I remember reading somewhere that Clyde was a hell of a good tennis player... but I could be remembering wrong.
horse on a tennis court? well, i'm sure he'd kick my butt a thousand and one ways if it were tennis or basketball.. the club was closing anyway, so there really wasn't a way to ask him for anything. anyway, he must be a really good tennis player if he can coach another good tennis player. i didn't hear what he was telling her, but my dad said he told her how to tweak her overhead serves a bit to add more topspin and to get the ball in more.. Man, this encounter is something that I will NEVER forget. And I shook his hand! Dang, I wish I had brought a camera
Yeah, well I don't read details. Well now you know where to go every Tuesday night. Bring your camera next time. Oh, and ask him what he thinks of the new threads.
Ok, I have met Clyde too and agree that he is very nice in person. And I do , have a pic with him and I and, ummm....Ken Lay. It was when Clyde came and visited Enron when I worked there and we were allowed to go to the execs offices and get pics made. I also got Clyde to sign the bill of my Enron ball cap. I am not sure where the pic is but I will post it when I find it. Untill then....anyone interested in the signed Enron hat before I put it up on eBay?? Ron
Francis was at the Legg Mason last weekend too. No other rockets showed up. I happed to catch the Rodderick and Henman match myself. Also, of note, at the World Championship of Poker some guy is wearing the Francis Jersey and he's got a load of money. check him out on ESPN.
I run into Clyde all the time. I live near his new restaurant, Drexler's Grill and BBQ and half the time I go there to eat, Clyde is there. My impression is that he is going back to his roots, which is running a family restaurant. On the new menu of Drexler's, it says that Clyde was working in his family restaurant since age 12. As for the quality of the new restaurant, it sure is nicer than the old one. However, the price of the BBQ has gotten more expensive.
But I bet it taste good. When I lived in Houston, I always wanted to see that place and never got a chance to go. I know of one BBQ place in NJ that is okay while the rest stink. Kind of makes my mouth water.
Got one better. I was playing golf at Herman last summer during the week and Clyde D. was there playing behind my group with his posses of 6. They were loud and high fiving on the greens. You could hear from green to green.
CPARKA where were you playing tennis at? I have seen him several times, or I did, I moved ...at Memorial Park...was the lady some fine ass white chick, all classy? I have a story too, I saw Robert Reid at Dave & Busters, about 6 years, ago, he looked pimped dude, all long and he was wearing the high white socks, some pumas, and some high ass light pink daisy dukes, atleast that is what it looked like to me, they were all riding his thigh, which by the way in a non-gay way...he has some nice, looking thighs....
I met Clyde a few years ago when I worked at the Aquarium in Kemah. He was very quiet and did not seem to enjoy all the attention. While working there I also met Booker T the wrestler, whom I used to work out with at 24 Hour Fitness on Nasa One and Ken "Crackhead" Caminiti. Cami is a big guy in person and can eat alot. We also used to hangout with Barkley and Kenny Smith almost every Tuesday at the Roxy when he was here as well. All of these guys are very cool when you talk to them like "average Joes" instead of making a scene. I think they let us hang with them so much cause my girl at the time was hot with big fake t***...lol. Oh yeah, saw Sleepy Floyd at Club 7 in Midtown last year and he was with some fines white chics. And last but not least, 3 weeks ago on a Wednesday we played golf at Memorial Park and Rudy T played in front of us. He seems to be fairly skinny these days but nice to see him in good health. Oh yeah, almost forgot this classic story about Matt Maloney. One night after the clubs me and my ex were eating burgers at Lukes, formerly beside the Galleria and Matt and his brother stumble in. My chic wanted to meet him so I waved him over to the table, yeah i was drunk too. He just sat down an started talking like we were boys then ask us if w would like to go back and party at his house in Sugarland. Well about that time his brother whom was down visiting, started talking **** to some black guy and before you know it got punched down, Matt just stood there and I ran over there and pulled the black guy off his bro. I think Matt was scared but I have been in my share of fights so I did not hesitate. I guess his brother thought since Matt was a baller that no one would mess with him; surprise, surprise. Well after the scuffle Matt said thanks for the help but he needed to get home and we both went our seperate ways. Well enough of my stories, I have some more minor ones but that's all for today.
MORE expensive!?! they needed to LOWER the price 9or give bigger portions. the buns on the brisket sandwitch was one of those small hamburger buns. nice to see them making some changes though. i still prefer Thelma's. i ran into clyde at a u of h function and he was really cool to the public--nice guy.
