While windows 8.1 isn't perfect, I don't see a reason to upgrade to Windows 10

Am I the only one who really really loves windows 8.1?

    1. I don't care anything about the start menu
    2. Cortana is probably just a bloat feature that's going to slow down my computer
    3. windows 8.1 is fast and secure and awesore for the most part

Some other considerations are: from what I understand windows 10, when it comes out, is going to be in technical preview and I really don't care to spend 2 years of getting updates that make windows 8.1 slow.

Cortana actually hasn't slowed my Windows 10 installations on either of my PC's. Windows 10 in general has made my laptops more responsive and quicker. And these are 2-3 year old models.

Wrong, Windows 10 is in technical Preview now and has been since October. As someone who has run it since then, I can tell you that the latest version now is completely different in every great way from the first one.

With that said, there are tremendous improvements to Windows 10 - and it is a complete rewrite from the ground-up even though the kernel hasn't changed that much (it is technically Windows NT 6.4).

Here are just a handful of reasons to upgrade:
    • It is free. Seriously, it costs you nothing but about 30 minutes of your time to upgrade.
    • More lightweight - Windows 10 was re-written on the XAML Framework, the same framework as their new Universal Windows Apps (including Office 2016). This makes the system far more light-weight as all front-end GUI components are written in an XML-based framework.
    • Universal Windows Apps - Their app store now utilizes Universal Windows Apps, so the "modern/metro" apps from Windows 8/8.1 will now run in re-sizable desktop windows if you want to. Why use UWApps instead of normal x86 apps? Because they are safer (only able to access Windows APIs) and stable (they run in their own sandbox).
    • Multiple Desktops - This is a feature that has been in some Linux distros for years, and it has now come to Windows - and it is amazing. Instead of alt-tabbing through 30 open windows, setup a "work" desktop, a "play" desktop and a "private" desktop for you know... uhh, private time.
    • Cortana is far from a bloat feature - and she gets more brilliant every day. Not to mention, app developers can tie into her API (something Apple barely allows with Siri). Have a smart home? Tie Cortana into it, "Cortana, dim the lights." etc.
    • Universal search - the new search bar (powered by Cortana) is amazing.
    • There are tremendous back-end security improvements with Windows 10, I attended a few Microsoft Ignite sessions about them - too many to list here.
    • App snapping - a feature that has been around since Windows 7, but now you can snap quadrants. Trust me, in a work environment is is fantastic.

I could go on, as there are hundreds of improvements - but I actually have to get work done today.

Indeed it is. It wasn't really possible in Windows 6.0 (Vista) and above because of Aero. The XAML GUI rework makes the desktop use far fewer resources, so multiple instances have a negligible performance cost.

Svper, I guess my reasoning is that I just got windows 8.1 the way I like it and now I got to deal with windows 10. I'll probably do it just because you know I am a Microsoft Fansboy like you, but my main concerns are the fact that the only feature I really care about might be cortana and edge.

My favorite features of windows OS in general is This PC feature (which is AWESOME, Robust and great), and the windows store.

Now if cortana could deliver news to me in a meaningful way that might be something I care about. I don't know I'm conflicted.

I love Windows 8.1, I'm one of the few people that have been a champion of Windows 8 since launch - but Windows 10 is what Windows 8 should have been (although technically it wasn't possible at the time). Windows 10 is Windows 8 evolved.

    Thanks =D

I am a fanboy, but I'm also a realist - I have no problem calling out when Microsoft screws up.

The mobile version of Windows 10 has me a lot more worried, although the latest build I installed yesterday actually runs without locking up my Lumia 1520. The mobile version is where the desktop version was about six months ago - which is kind of disconcerting. Although, at least the mobile team (Mainly Gabe) is completely transparent with all the hiccups.

Microsoft is a lot easier company to root for these days.

Windows 10 being free for Raspberry Pi is a genius move, got to give it to Microsoft on that one.

Directx12 is going to be a gamechanger for cpu optimization, it's Windows 10 exclusive. That's enough for me

I love Windows 8. Definitely more than 7. Having said that, I'll be getting the free upgrade to 10 without hesitation.

Funny ... degrading someone from Win 8 to Win 7
because they absolutely hate Win 8
[They loved XP and would have degraded back to that if possible and supported]

The main things I hate about windows 10 which I've heard about is that Media Center is gone, also I am forced to run my desktop computer like a desktop and not the way I have been using it.

Example, if I want to get to something like the settings, I'll have to use the start menu which I hate with a passion.

I use a touchpad and I can easily slide in to get to many options that I want. A huge start menu was not made to work well with touchpad gestures.
