Well then... remember, the final 2 days of the draft will only be available on MLB.com. Rounds 3-10 are today and will begin at noon. The Astros' first pick is 79.
Slot is about $765K. Matuella won't happen. Mac Marshall won't happen again unless he has dropped his asking price.
I love the 1 minute timing in the 2nd round. It was like the perfect amount of time for them to give out the information about the player.
There may be an overslot somewhere, but I'm guessing that the Astros will go on a run of senior signs today.
Yep. We'll probably see some HS overslot types on the final day (Mac Marshall, CJ Hinojosa types) as insurance picks in case something goes wrong with another signing. I don't expect more fireworks though unless one of Tucker or Bregman was had for a substantial discount.
Matuella has thrown 144 innings in 3 years at duke, he probably doesn't mind a chance to prove he can stay healthy.
I would be more than okay with rounds four to ten being college senior below slot value signs if it meant Matuella on top of Bergmann, Tucker and Dashing Daz
Just a reminder, Jacob Nix (well, Casey Close) could have still taken an offer of $616,165 from the Astros after the Aiken deal fell apart. If he's taken with the next pick (76), his slot value will be $801,900. If he falls to 94, then slot will be less than our offer last year. Now, there's definitely a chance that some team has an agreement with him to go above slot, but I don't imagine he figured he'd still be on the board right now. I can't believe Close doesn't get more crap for what he did to these kids.

Ironic that Nix was so hurt by Astros, he did not give them permission to redraft him this year. I am hoping that the Astros get Mac Marshall with one of those picks.
Well, Nix fired Close... so he probably feels the same way (that he was advised poorly, regardless of what he "should" or "shouldn't" have done).
It seemed the Astros really liked Nix. And now he has been falling.... And even if Astros tried to take him, they are not allowed. Interesting how far he will fall.
With the filed grievance and eventual settlement, he probably just figured there's enough "smoke" that would make any future relationship too complicated. Its doubt that he's holding a grudge like the Aiken camp, or that he's going to hold a permanent vendetta against them... but from his standpoint, if the Astros re-drafted him, every future "promotion" decision, or assignments, or future contract negotiation could be put into question by the events of what happened last year... to the point that he just wanted a guaranteed fresh start elsewhere. The main problem is, he didn't think the other teams would be this dis-interested.
Can you say straw man? No one hits on all of their picks and never has. The point is that the Astros most likely do not see Eshelman as a future #4-5 starter. The Astros philosophy is different and it has been successful. The Astros are huge on command and pinpoint placement. Guess what Eshelman does very well (other than be dominant in college)? Does that mean Eshelman will be Dallas K? There are no guarantees. So what does it mean? It means that when someone relies on conventional scouting protocol (velocity) and not more evolved scouting; their evaluation concerning upside is not really worth much.
You can understand the basic sentiment, there are 29 other teams. But unless you are a real blue chipper, and he isn't, it's just a bad idea to eliminate one team that you know for sure really liked you.
Sure... but if I'm looking to start a job/career, and the first company that looked to hire me had to pull their agreed-upon offer for situations out of their control, and I ended up in a grievance/settlement situation with them... I'd also probably look elsewhere. Perhaps he doesn't care as much about his overall slot since he's got settlement money already...
