ill be there...bass player for SFC is quite sexy and quite awesome on the bass...which makes her all the more sexy. snoopy, the drummer for SFC just replaced me in my last band after i quit. talk about an upgrade in talent! i wouldnt be as jealous if they got someone crappy to replace me, but snoopy rocks!
*yawn* Lack of good music is one of the only big downsides to Houston. The rap scene is OK, could be better. Never been to Austin or Dallas. Any good rappers anywhere in Texas? Lil' Flip is a lyrical genius.
Did anyone else notice that this was a 2 year old thread that Chance randomly revived? Heh... If he was a new poster, he'd have been lynched. Oh well, I guess you get the benefit of the doubt when your music cracks SportsCenter.
I also hate to say anything nice about Dallas, but everything I've been told says Tripping Daisy is from Dallas. BTW.....I saw them about.....ohhhh....more than a dozen times in Nacogdoches. The were so much ****ing fun.
Dangerous Toys? They were popular for a while before the grunge movement killed most bands of that style.. DarkHorse, I didnt notice it till I got to Chance's post...after responding to the one quoted here..No chance of getting flamed for Chance..It's actually as relevant today as it was beofre...the scene still bites. The last band I worked with before I quit doing that stuff was an original band that was forced to play a few covers by the clubs...the club owners didnt want an all original band. but it was never to be since they were still playing late 80's to early 90's metal in a grunge environment..
yeah, I can attest to the stagnant nature of the Houston scene. We've gone from being 90% cover to 90% original and everywhere in between. The trick is to play here and there and be patient. The real action comes in shopping your product, not being seen in Houston. We've learned to roll with it - survive and adapt (we have 7 current members and 30 plus ex-members). We're recording our 3rd CD now and feel strongly about a couple of tracks. We'll see.
Good luck with that.. after going thru 3 drummers and 3 bassists..we eventually got 25K to record an CD...and printed off like 500 coipes...nothing ever came of it..except I got a engineering credit on it...
Who has alot of money? Somebody should buy some buildings, and make some clubs near each other, preferbly on the same street.
It can be amazingly difficult to get anything accomplished, but, honestly, that is the whole business in general. It is a b**** to be successful in this business no matter where you live. The band I'm in currently is working on its first CD. We are lucky that we have both a lot of studio experience (as musicians, engineers and producers) as well as enough gear to handle the job. It saves an awful lot of money and we are staying on a pretty tight budget.
are you doing it in your studio? If so, I would imagine that would help tons.. if not, where are yall recording at, and with who( if you dont mind, just wondering if it's anyone I know)..
Umm, dude. The Buzz DOES have a local show. Pam Kelly hosts the Texas Buzz every Sunday from 10-Midnight. I'm proud to say that my band was on the first show. They even use one our songs and background music when they make announcements and stuff. Hell, our gig tonight was even listed at thebuzz.com. It's not as much as some other cities but at least its a step in the right direction. Pam Kelly had been trying for a while to get a local show and she finally got one.
With the downtown revival, we are poised to turn the scene around. There are a ton of night clubs downtown, all within walking distance, that already play or can play live music. The Murcury Room always has great live music usually R&B, albeit cover bands. It is always lively but usually not too packed. Next to the Grasshopper is some Mexican style bar that often has live music and seems packed when I go by. Just around the corner is Bongo's which is a Latin club that has live music. Sambuca Jazz Cafe The Engine Room (Rock, alternative and metal) The are seemingly dozens of dance clubs downtown and new ones opening all the time. These are all downtown pretty much within walking distance. Less than 5 mintues by car in Scott Gertner's Sky Bar which plays R&B and Jazz and is always packed. The Continental Club plays a wide range of live acts. By the time the Super Bowl gets here, downtown will be very alive. I can imagine that several other venues will open up by. If there is going to be a good music scene in Houston, it will be downtown. No question about it. That's the only chance we have where people can easily get from one place to the next and has any kind of atmosphere.
We are tracking in my room but we decided to mix with Mark Shannon at Bungalow Studios. Mark is a really good guy and has a small studio here in the Heights. I really wanted a different set of ears when mixing (not to mention better monitors), plus I wanted some extended editing capabilities that he can provide with his set up. I'm actually engineering and producing for the most part. I've always done that in bands but never really got the credit so this is my first chance to get the credit to go with the work.
Hmmm, I didn't realize that. Like I said in another thread, I don't do FM much anymore except for the occasional 90.9. I'll check it out tonight. And congrats on getting the airplay. My ex band recently had one of our songs played on MTV's Fraternity Life. Which reminds me. I need to call them and make sure they're not cheating me out of any money since I helped write it and it was me playing on the CD.
I wanted to say one more thing. My band is losing its drummer after September 5. Apparantly last night the Buzz mentioned that we were looking for a drummer on the radio and we got some responses today. I thought that was pretty cool.
This is an interesting discussion.. I've only played in a band in Seattle and despite its reputation in the 90's, it is a really tough town to gain a following. Maktub is probably the biggest group there right now. They are just starting to garner some national interest. So, my family is spending Thanksgiving in Houston. What are some good local Rags (newspapers) that have music events, etc? My cousins and I are hoping there will be a good show or two during the weekend we are in town. If you guys can recommend a newspaper/magazine that has local happenings, I'd really appreciate it. So, imadrummer - what instrument do you play?
Probably pick up a copy of Houston Music News. I used to pick up copies at Mars but they've closed down.
Thanks. I'll remember that. I'll also have to check if they have a website so we can do some research before we get to town.
A while ago, someone started a "BBS Jam Session" thread. It may have been AB. It never really materialized, but I think it would be a blast considering all the musicians on this board. We should set something up at an open-mike-night or something like that. That way none of the drummers would have to haul any gear. It would be a fun way for all of us to hook up, have a few beverages and do some playing. I haven't been to an open mike night in years. I don't even know if there are any around anymore. Anyone?
Houston Music News is horrible. Their listings are woefully incomplete, but worse, they're totally indiscriminate -- they give a huge list of band names only with no hints as to what's worth seeing. The Houston Press is bad too, but it's a huge step up from the Music News. Check www.houstonpress.com. There should be a better resource but there isn't. Anyone who thinks local music sucks should come to the Axiom this Friday to see one of Texas' best bands, middlefinger. They're a lounge/funk/punk/metal/ska/rock hybrid fronted by one of this state's best frontmen ever (Matt Kelly, ex-Sprawl, Joint Chiefs, Rugrash) and backed by a crackerjack ensemble from Conroe (incl. members of Clouseaux, 3 Fantastic and The Suspects). www.infernalbridegroom.com for details.
