Anybody remember Friday Night Videos? I used to live for that show in the mid to late 80s. I also remember thinking me and my friends were THE pimps at Astroworld. We hit that place atleast 3-4 times a week, wearing our different colored Converse and bike hats (the ones that flipped in the front). I still have a tape of us at a taping they did at Videocity one weekend night. Friggin' embarassing, but we still get a kick out of it. We even went to the New Kids on The Block/Tiffany concert to pick up chicks. How sad is that? I even reached third base for the first time at a Howard Jones concert at Southern Star Ampitheater, and broke up with that same girl at the Depeche Mode/OMD concert. I had turned too cool hanging out at Videocity and needed my space to flip my rat tail in peace. Late 80s I did nothing but party on Center Street, hang out at the Lizard Lounge and Numbers, or cruising Westheimer showing off my 16 inch MoMos. Anyone remember when 16" chrome rims were the "IN" thing? Turning 30 in 5 months really sucks...
reading stuff about your youth from the 80s is funny. I can't wait to post stuff like that 10 years from now when I turn 30.
hmm. want do i remember about the 80's? balls dropping, zztop at the summit, roller skating, renting my first surfboard and charging a desolate sergants beach all alone, skipping the second half of school to surf ground swells, searching for valley girls at the galleria, skating at trade winds, and at that time of my youth I wanted to hunt for bigfoot, not kill him but search for him, and even now this bottle of good wine brings back the call of the sasqautch.
Thinking back about Nintendo, do you guys remember the PAD that you could run and jump on? It was for the olympics game? Man I used to LOVE playing that.
Hooleee Crap. Don't tell me you know Earl Harvin. Earl is one of my all time favorite drummers. We used to follow his band Ten Hands all over Texas during the early 90's. I've probably seen about 20 of their shows, half of them at Fitz's. I still listen to Ten Hands all the time. I saw Earl on Seal's MTV Unplugged special after he got that gig. He stole the show IMO, he was even playing 4-mallet vibes. Now I've got his Earl Harvin Trio CD. I think it's safe to say ima_HugeEarlHarvinFan. BTW, Kevin taught at Cy Creek (where I went) for a year. He couldn't deal with our lame band directors. He probably doesn't even remember.
Well, I don't know him really. I met him a couple of times and introduced him to the Sabian rep that landed him his endorsement. When the Sabian guy was in town, I was working at a music store and I told him he had to go see Ten Hands just to see Earl and especially because the poor guy always had broken cymbals. It was even worse in Billy Goat, the punk band he played with. Earl did steal that show with Seal. That was really cool. I don't know how much of the Ten Hands stuff you have, but there is a site still out there that has ALL of their stuff available for download. That includes their demo - Kung Fu, That's What I Like - which was only released on cassette and, something I didn't even know existed - The Big One That Got Away. I don't know if you have it, but they released a disc with Earl called The Big One is Coming. It was a live recording. The Big One that Got Away was done during the same set of shows but they didn't release it until after the band broke up. It includes a really lengthy drum solo and some of their coolest stuff from the Earl era that never made it to tape - Donde Es Mi Zapatos, the Pollution Song, Love is the Question, etc. I also have Jazz for Jerks and Be My Guru, both without Earl but with a really good drummer from North Texas. Incidentally, Paul Slavens (the singer/pianist) and the stick player, last I heard, were playing in a band called Green Romance Orchestra with Dave Abruzee, the drummer from Beaumont who played with Pearl Jam. Paul also had a solo piano release in Dallas. Earl's trio is still rolling along. Originally, it was a quintent and Roy Hargrove played trumpet. By the way, the site where you can get all those songs is... http://www.doomsday.com/john/10hands/ Click the download MP3's link and follow the instructions on the page for the username and password. I got all that stuff a while back and love it. I never missed a show they played in Houston (at Fitz) from probably 89 - 92. I saw them in Austin a couple of times as well. The few times I spoke with Earl, he was a really nice guy. He demonstrated to my friends and I how he was able to do triplets with one foot on his bass drum. It was crazy!
sounds like some of us went off topic... more movies- porky's revenge of the nerds meatballs bachelor party ah, those stupid teen movies that I wasn't allowed to see... but saw
drummer...on an unrelated note...send me a mail thru the board...i tryed to send you one, but you have it turned off.. Its about a question you asked earlier in GARM..
Jeez...I disappear for 3 or 4 months and look how things have changed. Jeff turns a post into a music post and types diatribes about all of the music people with which he's tight. Then someone without 13,000 posts or a moderator label says, "hye guys...get a room!" and the conversation is finished on email. Oh wait...that's how things were before. (Now this is where Ziggy or some other guy that has been gone forever pops in and accuses me of derailing) Thanks for the reference about our 80s song BTW.
Where are my shoes? If anyone here knew me from about 1982 thru 1985, please remind me what happened. That part's all a blur.
Except in my case...it's from 83-90 The b**** about being that way is that from time to time when visiting friends from those days..someone always pops up with pictures that I never remember being a part of..usually of us doing some really stupid ****.. I keep insisting they faked the pics..afterall..I didnt really look like that did I?
Man, I should have checked this stuff out a lot sooner. Only being alive from 86 and on, I figured I couldn't contribute, but I guess I can since I remember all the cartoons. Basically all I did was watch Nickelodeon all day long. Occasionally, I'd watch something else though. And although I wasn't good at it, NES was fun. I only remember Mario, the duck hunt game, and some karate game we had. I wonder if I still have some of those TMNT tapes...probably not. I can't really remember what was 80's, though. For some strange reason, I have this memory of some educational show on Nick that had a elephant mascot thing. Oh yeah, when was Chucky made? That doll freaked me out, especially since my neighbors had one. BTW, speaking of Pete and Pete, I have a friend that looks so much like the older Pete in that show. My friend had that on recently and said he looked like my other friend and I started laughing. If they were ever to redo that show, my friend would definitly get the job.
It was just the other day I was sitting on my bed When a very disconcerting thought Occurred to my head I hadn't seen my shoes In a couple of days I knew I had better find them Any old way So I got down on my knees I started sifting through my clothes And I scared up a very rank aroma Gently wafted up my nose I started into shivers I started into shakes Cause I knew if I didn't find my Zapatos I wasn't going to make IT! You know Chorus: Donde es mis Zapatos Donde es mis Zapatos I really want to know Yes, I really want to know Donde es mis Zapatos I started to feel ogky My eyes began to tear up Cause I was searching in vain for my Zapatos It was a bad dream like I was running through syrup I started to hallucinate I started to oscillate My mind began to modulate If I was a girl, I would have probably began to ovulate Anyway I looked into the sky And I had to ask my maker "Why? Why can't I find my Zapatos, Dude? Well, I need them. I feel that I've been seriously misconstrued Chorus It was a very bad situation My prospects was weak I searched underneath my bed for my Zapatos I must tell you the outcome was bleak I might break out in hives I might develop a rash Cause stuffed in the toes of my Zapatos That's where I keep my stash!!! Chorus
Comin' home to Bushlock Sadie, Comin' hoooooome She's my woman, she's my baby, Comin' hooooome Comin' home to Bushlock Sadie, Comin' hooooome Pretty little woman gonna drive me crazy... BUSHLOCK!
