The max Memphis' contract as stipulated by CBA rules should be 22.8 million over 4 years. The yearly breakdown should be like: 03-04 4.9 mil (this year) 04-05 5.4 mil 05-06 5.9 mil 06-07 6.6 mil You can look at other Rocket and non-Rocket contracts here: http://www.nationwide.net/~patricia/contracts Another site with the CBA and lots of other relevant info is: http://www.realgm.com What I am asking is should we match (not will we match), what is the fans verdict?
I say match. To fill other areas of need, u cant create another weakness. Lets face it, its not a Corey Maggate type contract. Its under 25 mil!! Because u made a mistake by signing Mooch doesnt mean u punish yourself by NOT signing Pose.
I say first we should trade Glen Rice and a 2nd round pick to Utah for the 9.5 million trade exception...and then match for Posey.
Question for the group: do the 22 nationally televised games at all change this equation? More of nationally televised games = more exposure = more sales of team apparel. In the last 24 hours, the team came into a cash windfall. If this is true, then it stands to reason that Les now has deeper coffers. Would we then be willing to pay some luxury tax, whereas we wouldn't a couple of days ago? (Apologies if this question has already been posed elsewhere).
I voted no. I don't pretend to understand the salary cap or the luxury tax, I don't think the decision should be financial. We need guys who can know down open shots. Posey can run the floor, and can sometimes score easy buckets cutting to the basket, but how valuable is that on this team? How often do the guys with the ball in their hands actually pass it? What we need is a three who can spread the floor in the half court offense so the guys who dominate the ball will have room to work. j Edited-my numbers were way off- 29-29 with 14-10 without Posey. ( not that I was blaming him for our record, I was blaming chemistry ).
I kinda agree that Posey is not a perfect fit...but WHO is??? Posey is the best available for us right now...he's got the most chemistry with the other Rockets now...WHO else can replace him? Piatkowski replaces 3/5 of him...
The thing is next year is not a live-or-die year. So we can be patient. Pike brings sharp shooting this team defenitely need for a cheap price. Money considered, Pike is a surer fit than Posey.
One thing to consider, in losing Posey, is that well probably see alot of 3 guard lineups with Mobley, Pike and Francis.
Anything but the three Guard lineup! Les better get Posey!! With all that money you got back from the NBA you shoukd keep Posey
3 guard line up would only be a short term solution....u r not gonna win in the playoffs w/ that lineup, even w/ Yao in the middle..... yeah, i know the case is that we are not beating the BIG 4 this year anyways, but hell, 2-3 years from now, wouldnt u want a lineup thats been playing together, w/ most of the role players already knowing their roles on the team?
Yep...by then....Pike won't be able to move. We may need to spend money....but Posey is young and can be part of our future...and can improve his shooting before 2 to 3 years comes by...
i voted no. i love james posey as a role player and despite the fact we really do need somebody who can knock down the open shots and he doesn't do that consistently, i wanted him resigned. i don't however think he's worth going over the salary cap over. otherwise it's arguable if he's worth that contract.
I would not pay Posey anything over 3 million. His defense is greatly overhyped. Most of the time he could not shoot the ball into the ocean. He is a great open court player and thats about it. We need to get rid of the bad contracts we already have. Signing Posey would make that situation much worse. Teams who win championships (Lakers, Spers, Bulls and Rockets) did not overpay for role players. Lakers - Shaq and Kobe. They didn't have anyone else making serious jack. Spers - David and Duncan. The rest are young role players. Bulls - Jordan and Pippen. Rodman was a superstar in his own right. Rockets - Hakeem and then Clyde. See a familiar scenario? No reason to tie down mucho money in role players. We have two stars in Ming and Francis and we are paying seriouls money to underachievers like Cato, Moochie and Maurice. Let Posey walk and see what develops during the season.
O3, Posey's contract seems bad only because of Mooch, Cato and Mo. If not for that anything under 25 mil is not bad. But because of that u dont wanna lose a quality free agent. Try moving Mo, or someone else. But dont let Posey walk out. I dont think he is overpriced imo.
I say match it... I like what he brings to the table as a player. We traded Kenny Thomas away for what? We should atleast get something in return for the guy rather than just let him walk, regardless of the other lame contracts given out... Let Tito walk, same with Tmo - these guy suk..... A new coach is not going to bring the actual defense, we gotta have the players to do it, and Posey one of those guys. Trade for an exception, whatever it takes... just keep him.
shane battier. 6-8, can play D (not that that should be a focus for any 3 we get since we hope yao and eg will be back there for years to come shutting down the middle), especially help D, is very smart, and hits 3's at a near 40% clip. if i had my choice of any role playing, not gonna cost a ton SF he would be it.
definately match in my opinion. otherwise we're losing kenny thomas for nothing, and piatkowski is our starting sf
We were going to lose Kenny Thomas for nothing anyway. If he wasn't traded, we would have let him walk at the end of the season just like we appear to be doing with Posey. With Taylor and Griffin, we weren't going to pay him 50 mil over 6 years as the 6-er's are doing. j
We're already over the salary cap!!! You can't sign a free agent that was not on your team if it will make your team go over the salary cap. But you can resign your own players for as much money as possible and go over the salary cap. That's why we were screwed by Cato, Moochie, Taylor, and Rice. And we extended Francis's contract although we were already over the salary cap. What we don't want to go over is this luxury tax limit. If you go over this...then you will be forced to pay double the amount that you are over the luxury tax......which is why the Rockets don't want to resign Posey....WHICH DOESN'T MAKE SENSE...because according to some here, even if we sign Posey, his contract starts at like 4 million so we will still be under the luxury tax limit or whatever you wanna call it. Maybe they don't want Posey...or maybe they want veterans. I agree...... Perfect! I would like him too...hmm...is there any way to get him?
