Could everyone here live with a "Blockbuster Deal" where the only "blockbuster" aspect that we as Rocket fans could find in it, would be that Hakeem went to another team and we ended up with one player that could start and one ( or a couple of players) with a very short contract(s)? Would we still call this a "blockbuster deal"? Expectations for Hakeem's eventual demise as a Rocket should run from: " ... absolutely stupid, how could they? ... " to " ... well, at least we got a starter! ... " Where does everyone twist on this? Doorknob number one or doorknob number two? ------------------
oeilpere says
We are getting a starter!!!
Is he young! And can he rebound!! I'm down for that. Hell, I'm down for a draft pick!

Whatever makes the Rockets better. I still think the best deal is to leave things be, take our lumps the rest of this year, and hit the Free Agent market, with LARGE amounts of cap space available. DaDakota ------------------ If Mankind evolved from monkeys and apes, then why are there still monkeys and apes?
I agree with mango.... If this hurts our cap more than a buck or two, I'm not sure I'd even think about it! For me, this has never been, "Lets do what's best for Dream", or "I can't believe the foundation of the Rockets and my fave player is leaving...blah blah blah" This has to be about what's best for the organization longterm. This means SAR, Webber, (or D, none of the above) or just having cap space in general so we can be flexible and explore options. I say do the deal if it doesn't hurt us financially! ------------------
So they are trading Olajuwon and others for a power forward and others whose contracts expire in 2002 or so...? ------------------ [This message has been edited by hardwood (edited January 26, 2001).]
Yes, Heb, come join me. It's nice over here. Seriously, I guess everything -- ass-kicker and all -- just fell through and we'll never hear about it now. A year from now people will be saying that the Rockets are stupid because we could have traded for Abdur-Rahim and passed on it even though we have no clear indication at all that he was even discussed. The reason I posted my thread and I suppose the reason you posted your own is to just get some clarity on what Clutch was told could happen so we can separate what was real from what is poster's fantasy. I wonder if Clutch should have kept the whole thing to himself instead of telling us he has a secret he wasn't going to share. But I'm not going to make any big bones about it now. It's cool. If he wants to tell us what he heard, I think it would be great because it'll cut through a lot of those "the Rocks are incompetent because they could have done this and didn't" arguments. But if he doesn't tell us, I'm sure it's because he feels he can't and I'm fine with that. He has cc.net to protect. All hail, General Clutch! Achebe, you gotta learn how to blackmail Clutch into telling you. Kagy did! He said he was going to continue losing his mind in the Hangout until Clutch told him.
The main thing we have got to remember is that the Rox do not want to loose their cap space for next yr. that is why it is so difficult to trade Dream, the proper scenario has to fall into place where the only thing we get are players that are in the last yr. of their contracts so next yr. they would be free agents. Les cannot say he won't trade Hakeem because I am sure they are exploring all their options, IMHO I totally believe this would be a rather HUGE trade one involving many teams.... One example would be we trade Hakeem to Vancouver for Rahim and Big Country, we turn around and trade Big country to a team in the east for players in their last yr. of their contracts or tradable type players... then Vanc. turns around trades hak. to Miami since that is were Hak. would rather be . We can also trade some of the players we get from the Reeves trade and either get picks or players in their last yr. of their contracts or we may even have to release some of them to make room in the roster.. all of course last yr. players ! for something like that to happen would take lots of playing around. What about Shandon and Mo ? well, we already would have talked to Shandon and we would have an understanding w/him that he would take the player option he has for his 3rd yr. w/us and as far as Mo goes, if he really likes it here he would sign for 6 mil since that is how much we would have left after all is said and done. As far as center goes we would want to get one during the draft or a CBA type center until we can afford a better option. Think about the nucleous we would have though: Francis/Mooch Shandon/Cuttino SAR/Langhi Mo Taylor/Rogers Cato/Collier That is only 10 players but the other 2 would come from the Reeves trade! so this is nothing but a suggestion and also to demonstrate how hard this would be to accomplish of course we could avoid all this by simply waiving Hakeem ! ------------------ If you are a positive thinking person but yet you listen to country music, isn't that odd?
Never is a long time!! How long did it take for the fans to learn about the aborted Sampson trade? No, I'm not going to fantasize about Dream and MJ being together all those years... On the fake "ass-kicker" deal above, anyone else hear Bob Horry talking about exactly that? Him and Shaq for Dream and "the guy with the braids" (The Wizard?) ------------------
I'd say "door #1" with caution" - Anderson and Taylor should be kept, in light that CWebb is about the only worthwile FA this coming season - at least, the only one we want... Wait. We can't get a CWebb. Wait........ ------------------
As far as multiple team-trades, we'll keep Mo and Shandon, I'm sure. You could draw in Chicago, maybe: Cato to the Bulls, Reeves to Miami, Dream and one of Miami's last-year-contract player(s) (Majerle, Ceballos) to Vancouver, with many draft picks. Vancouver could clear 20 million (excluding the draft picks) from next year's payroll. Just a crazy suggestion, though. ------------------
If I understand correctly, from comments by Doc, Clutch, and 'piere, there are two things happening, separate from each other. If there is a deal on the table which is a wink-wink deal, that allows Dream to be waived to go to the team that we trade other players, then we couldn't come right out and say he was part of the trade. We'd have to say that we don't know what will happen on the deal. But we wouldn't go ahead with it, until the other trade was consumated. I love this, actually, because of the cap space we could end up with. We could move Cato and his inflated contract, and get a starter and a player or two who will reduce our cap space even more than what we end up with from Dream's contract. Cato is a base year player, which limits trades. If the deal is somehow with Miami, they would love to get Carlos as well, so he could even be in the deal, but noone besides Hardaway is a BYC. So, unless the trade is with Chicago or LAC, a BYC player has to be a part of the deal. ------------------ the more I know, the more I know I don't know... Sherlock! I've been waiting for you to come here and sort out this mess. But you're not totally clear. How can we say we don't know what will happen with one deal, when we can't go ahead with it until another one is done? Do you mean we have to deal Cato (plus whoever) first, say that we don't know what will happen with Dream, and then waive him? Somebody! Find all BYC players on the Heat, Suns, and Grizz!
I know this isnt the most accurate source, but found some interesting clues from bskball.com... Another interesting factor... Don't know quite what to make of it, but it might be a four way between Houston, Vancouver, Miami and the Bulls. ------------------ http://clubs.yahoo.com/clubs/houstonrockets2000
Please see my post in the Doc Rocket "let's make a deal" thread. Something like that? Complicated, yes, but would explain the long-ass delay in a deal going down. ------------------
