Yeah, Adam Driver is awesome, but he doesn't look as menacing as a typical Sith Lord.

However...I'm still excited for his character.

from what i remember the original star wars didn't have a whole lot of buzz. it was more of a slow build. it wasn't till empire strikes back that george lucas stepped on your throat.

I think he's gonna be in a mask and might have some cyborg elements on his face. Obviously they wouldn't show the full look for a VF fluff piece.

So that's why they call it a service droid.

The first Star Wars was a phenomenon, the likes of which we will never see again. The movie stayed in theaters literally for YEARS, and people would line up around the block to buy tickets to see it.

    That will never happen again.

And Empire was EXTREMELY hyped, at least as much as it was possible to hype something, when you only had print and three major TV networks, and 'product tie-ins' hadn't really yet become as pervasive then as it is now - ie you didn't have a Happy Meal with toys from every new movie that came out, not back then.

The real issue though is the fact that with the first two movies, Lucas did NOT own the properties, and did NOT have total creative control. He was still 'under the thumb' of the studios, which he hated. He was smart though, smart like a rat, and he made sure that he had enough pull and rights to claim ownership after Empire was so successful. He started his OWN independent studio ('Lucasfilm'), and no longer had anyone looking over his shoulder, saying things like 'No, George, you can't do that, that's stupid.' With Star Wars and Empire, he had those things in place to rein him in, but beginning with Return of the Jedi, that was no longer the case.

But with Return of the Jedi, Lucas was in total control himself. He surrounded himself with yes-men, who were terrified to say anything negative to George about anything he ever said or did, despite them all knowing he was leading them to the creation of a disastrous product. Which is why there is such a marked decrease in quality after Empire. Hell, Lucas didn't even finish writing the FIRST DRAFT of the SCRIPT until the actual first day of shooting.

We are so lucky to have him out of the loop entirely. The new movies cannot help but be a major improvement over anything Lucas ever did when he was without supervision. Lucas gave Disney his 'treatment' of the story for the episodes 7,8 & 9, and Disney said basically, 'Uhhh, thanks George, we'll take it from here.' And then they burned his 'treatment' and buried the remains in a shallow grave.

    Thank goodness.

Did this really happen, or are you speculating?

Hell, would be interesting to see what he had in mind... just for giggles.

How George Lucas' Star Wars 7 Ideas Were Used By Disney

The short answer: they weren’t…at all. Now, here’s the long version.

It was revealed in a recent interview that George Lucas, the father of the Star Wars movies, had originally planned to make Star Wars: Episode 7 before Disney purchased Lucasfilm. He even began developing some ideas for the next installment, which he passed along to Disney. As it turns out, though, the Mouse House and J.J. Abrams didn’t use Lucas’ treatment ideas for the current script.

I had the chance to speak with Lucas for his upcoming film, an animated musical called Strange Magic, and asked about any details he could offer on the ideas he was tossing around. In response, he revealed this tidbit:

The ones that I sold to Disney, they came up to the decision that they didn't really want to do those. So they made up their own. So it's not the ones that I originally wrote [on screen in Star Wars: The Force Awakens]

Unfortunately, he wouldn’t go into detail about his early ideas for his Star Wars: Episode 7 script, but there are some things we can infer. An interview with Mark Hamill from back in 1983 made the rounds online a while ago, and it revealed footage of Luke Skywalker talking about how Lucas approached him about playing an Obi-wan-type character in a potential sequel and passing the torch to another generation of Jedi. Though, this seems like a general enough kernel of a story to have also been thought up by Abrams and company. Could it still be in play?

As we reported earlier, Lucas’ plan to make Star Wars: Episode 7 was snuffed when he realized the time commitment was too much for him to take on. Making a new trilogy of this already massive franchise would mean putting his life on hold yet again for another 10 or so years. "The time is more important to me than the money," he said. Couple that with Disney coming along at just the right time, and he was willing to pass the torch.

Now that he’s done with Star Wars, though, he’s excited to develop more "experimental" films as he called them. And Strange Magic fits that bill. Telling the story of strife between fairies and goblins through covers of popular songs and colorful animation, the film is what Lucas believes to be his "film for 12-year-old girls."

Still, the more we learn about Star Wars: Episode 7, the more we want to know about what it could’ve looked like if Lucas were at the helm. You can watch his full statement in our video interview below.

So far, we know that Oscar Isaac will portray an X-Wing pilot named Poe Dameron, John Boyega will play a fleeing Stormtrooper (or, more likely, someone disguised as a Stormtrooper), Daisy Ridley will play someone named Rey who knows how to ride a Speeder, and there will be a new Sith named Kylo Ren and a new droid named BB-8. And that’s just naming a handful of the immense cast of new and returning players.

Question, why does everyone like Adam Driver so much? I thought he was pretty hilarious the few times I've watched the show Girls, but he seems surprisingly well known here. What else has he done?

    Mostly from Girls.

He graduated from Juilliard (Kevin Spacey, Robin William, Jessica Chastain, Oscar Issac, Ving Rhames, Viola Davies etc) so he's a classically trained actor. Because of the nature of the medium (theatre) classically trained actors are taught how to create a character with their voice, body and movements. This will serve him well as he's gonna be in a mask through most of the movie and maybe makeup without it. Same thing with Lupita Nyongo, Yale drama graduate, being a MO/CGI character. Good casting on the part of JJ.
