For Harden to be the Finals MVP he really need to step it up in the playoffs and become aggressive and score. He made plays and scored in the Dallas series but more is needed if they want to win against the Clippers. I believe they can pull it off

Well said. JR is like Woj. Fantastic at reporting news but his opinion pieces leave a little to be desired. But maybe it's just because his pessimism had grown thin.

Finals MVP only takes into account what happens in the Finals. It is exactly why Danny Green of all people was in the running until Ray Allen slammed the door on the 2013 Finals.

    stupid.

take Curry off the Warriors, they still win 45 games probably. take Harden off the Rockets, and we would be lucky to win 35. Shouldnt it count for something that a large portion of the year was Harden and 4 guys? Yeah Dwight's a sexy name but he barely played this year.

I said all series when people were bashing James in the game threads, I don't know what more you want him to do. He took what the defense gave him all series and played an all-around great series. He's not going to score 50 every night. He does so much more than that though. His peripheral stats are second to none at his position, including defense.

Let me throw out two stats the media doesn't follow closely, but are very important and telling.

James Harden finished with 12.2 offensive win shares, second only to Chris Paul who had 12.9. Stephen Curry had 11.5 and finished third. James Harden finished with 4.2 DEFENSIVE win shares, good for 10th in the league. Stephen Curry was slightly behind at 4.1, good for 15th. In both categories James outpaced Curry.

And the most mind-boggling stat to me is this, James Harden finished 2,217 points scored, which was good for first in the NBA. The next closest guy was Stephen Curry with 1,900 points, only a mere 317 points behind. 317 points behind! So you're telling me the guy who scored 317 more points than anyone isn't the MVP? Lulz.

And before you want to tell me that Curry sat out a lot, all that tells me is he had a great supporting cast since they were able to blow out so many teams. Curry averaged 0.727 points per minute. James Harden averaged 0.744. James Harden was the focus of opposing defenses for most of the season. Stephen Curry had a teammate average over 20 points per game. The Rockets second leading scorer this season was Dwight Howard at 15.8 PPG in only 41 games. Of players that played most of the season, Trevor Ariza averaged 12.8 per game.

So let me get this straight, James Harden is surrounded by a bunch of guys that get injured, a couple of midseason acquisitions, one of which is a so-called cancer by the media, and defensive-minded players at PG and SF. Tarik Black started games at center. The second leading scorer for most of the season was a mere 14.6 points per game below Harden. Stephen Curry is surrounded by the DPOY, a guy who averages 21.7 PPG, and none of the key rotation players were out for any significant length of time.

Yeah Stephen Curry is the MVP of the league, yeah absolutely, of course, duh, I mean obviously. What a joke.

The statistical argument for Curry is that he had a higher PER, WS/48, RPM, TS%, and AST%.

Curry has the luxury of being surround by multiple other offensive threats, including a guy just as capable as he is of creating his own shot in Klay Thompson. This contributes to Curry being able to accumulate great stats. James Harden is the entire focus of opposing defenses yet he is able to outpace Curry in many of the important stats. If James Harden was playing next to Klay Thompson he would be absolutely unstoppable.

Curry won because his teammates were healthier and more consistent. It is what it is.

exactly, he won because of others, not because of himself. simply infuriating, it's like the exact opposite of what mvP stands for

I'm all for extolling the virtues of Curry's teammates because that team is stacked, but Klay can't create his own shot at anywhere near the level of Curry or Harden, or even Jimmy Butler for that matter.

Klay is a phenomenal catch and shoot specialist, finisher, and occasional successful slasher. But if he were put in the position to handle the rock and manufacture buckets against a zeroed in D, he would crumble.

He will improve, hell he's already improved a little, right now though he needs his looks created for him.

If Klay were on Houston, Harden would easily be averaging 10+ assists though. I guarantee if ruined/missed assists were a stat, Harden would be leading the league by far.

The MVP is rarely ever the "MVP". It's just whatever narrative the media wants to spin in order to fit who they want to win.

Curry was the best player on the best team. Durant was the golden boy most dominant offensive player in the league. LeBron was the all around best player. The list goes on.

I doubt Harden ever wins it. Unless he just goes with some Westbrook-esque stats, he just doesn't have the following. He, quite obviously, had a more impactful season than Curry, but, for some reason, an individual award came down to team performance.

Well...the real losers when it comes to this news is the Clippers. Engaged and angry Harden? Uh oh.

    Enjoy your little trophy Steph.
