Actually there is a soft drink that is popular in the North East (at least Md. area) called "Wink" and it was Franchise's favorite drink as a kid. It also reffers to how quick he is. (quick as a wink, like tierre said).

Here's a quote from a Francis fan page:

"His story starts before college when he was just a kid he got the nickname Wink. He got that name because he always drank that soda."

Here's the link to that page:

I've read stuff in ESPN, SI, SLAM, etc and they always say it was because he was "quick as a wink" and quote somebody from his childhood. Never heard that soda mentioned and that site you linked doesn't say where it got it's info from.

because while he's dribbling the shotclock down to the buzzer, the time it takes to ask himself "should i pass the ball?" and the time it takes for him to say "no" to himself is as quick as a wink.

    sg, van gundy.... sg. :)
