Domestic vs. Foreign Affairs

    The 2004 election may be won based on who can frame the issue. The latest Gallup poll shows a huge shift towards trusting Democrats on domestic issues.

    Republicans are favored for terrorism, Iraq, and foreign affairs.

    Democrats are now favored on education, the budget deficit, the economy, unemployment, and prescription drugs.

    The one that struck me is the budget deficit, given Republicans traditional strength of fiscal conservatism.

    In the past 6 months, Republicans have lost ground or remained flat on all 8 of those issues (Reps actually gained +1% on 3 of then - within the margin of error). They've lost major ground in general view of foreign affairs, though. If Democrats can move up there, this will become one very interesting campaign.
