Warriors find Arenas' replacement in Claxton
    By Marc Stein
    ESPN.com

ESPN.com's Marc Stein reports that the Warriors will sign free-agent point guard Speedy Claxton to a three-year contract believed to be worth $10 million.

Arenas, 21, the Warriors' starting point guard and the NBA's Most Improved Player last season, signed an offer sheet believed to be worth $65 million with the Washington Wizards on Monday night. Golden State had 15 days to match the contract, but the addition of Claxton serves as an unofficial concession that the Warriors won't match.

Claxton, 25, became a hot commodity after helping the San Antonio Spurs to the NBA championship. He averaged 6.2 points and shot 56 percent from the field in the six-game series victory over the New Jersey Nets, coming up big in the title-clinching win in Game 6 with 13 points and four assists off the bench in place of slumping starter Tony Parker.

Claxton will step right in as the Warriors' starting point guard. The team's backup, Earl Boykins, is also a free agent, and the point guards currently on the roster are second-round pick Derrick Zimmerman and Steve Logan, a second-round pick last year who did not reach contract terms with the team.

Teams are wasting no time covering their asses.

Hopefully Rockets and Posey can reach an agreement SOON, so we can pursue whatever scraps is left.

I think Arenas was just too tall for that team.

This puts GS down a notch or 2, personally I think they are better with Boykins starting than with Speedy. Speedy is going to find it is awefully tough when you don't have TD sucking the defense and join the everyday pounding and fan/scout microscope of a league starter. Lue or Ollie would have been better as a starter IMO.

Desert Scar - I disagree. Look back at what he did for Philadelphia just a year or two ago as the starter. He and the team more than held their own while Snow was out.

It's a nice signing by the Warriors, and one they had to make. He may be small, but he'll do well for that team.

Speedy may not be a great PG, but he's still young. He has time to develop into a nice solid floor leader. He may not be flashy but he gets the job done. Even without TD, I expect him to be a good fit into the Warrior's system. He can go uptempo fast break if he wants, but he can also set the team up in the halfcourt. He's a smart player, and the Warriors got a nice consolation prize for losing Arenas.

He is 25 with some injury history. He also can't hit a 3 to extend the defense and is overmatched as a starter by taller, stronger, 1s. He has never reached 8 PPG in a season nor averaged half a games PT. I guess he was the best they could find with players like Lue (better shooting) and Ollie (tougher) gone who are a little more servicable as starters--but it is no kind of consolation for the 21 year old, bigger, taller, stronger faster, better shooting, and more dynamic Arenas.

Speedy/Boykins will arguably being the worst PG tandom in the league. GS better sure as heck resign Boykins too--who at least can keep the defense honest even if in some areas he is further overmatched than Speedy.

Desert Scar - it's been through freak injuries and lack of opportunity that Speedy did not get his full chance. He's a major improvement over Lue and especially Ollie and his half-season in Philly replacing Snow and performance in the finals is more indicative of Claxton's ability than seasonal stats.

In Claxton's two years he has had great players around him and very limited roles required--and even then he wasn't that good at it. I don't have high expectations for him at all as a regular starter.

I definetly take Lue over him, who is fairly similar except Lue is a wee bit bigger and has 3 point range. I probably take Ollie (more physical and better defender than both--but like Claxton has marginal range on his shot) as a starter too over Claxton (especially assuming the return of the tiny offensive fireplug in Boykins to GS), but we will just have to see which guys have better years/indepedent careers.

I think Claxton will be fine as a regular starter. It's not like GS is lacking for talent; they don't have the superstar like Philly and SA did, but they have a lot of all-around talent. But, as you say, we'll just have to wait it out and see what happens.

UPDATED: Claxton may stay; Horry gets offer from Spurs

There could be a wrinkle in the reports that Spurs backup point guard Speedy Claxton has joined the Golden State Warriors.

Claxton reportedly has agreed to a three-year, $10 million contract to take over the starting point guard slot that opened when Gilbert Arenas agreed to a $65 million deal with the Washington Wizards.

But a source has indicated that Claxton told Spurs coach Gregg Popovich that he would remain with the team if the Spurs matched the Warriors' offer.

Could be a ploy to get more $$$ from the Warriors.

    From ESPN INSIDER 7-23-03

The Warriors moved quickly to replace Arenas with Speedy Claxton on Tuesday. His agent, Bill Duffy, denied a report in the San Antonio Express News that Claxton was still willing to rejoin the Spurs if they'd match the Warriors' three-year, $10 million offer.

According to Duffy, Claxton could have made more money in San Antonio or Utah, but he preferred the starting opportunity available with the Warriors.

"He's made his commitment to Golden State," Duffy told the San Francisco Chronicle. "He loves the way they play and he wants the responsibility of having his own team to run. It's a great fit."

Warriors GM Garry St. Jeans seemed happy with the consolation prize. "You had a big, strong, powerful, quick and fast point guard that was explosive," St. Jean said of Arenas. "Now you're getting a diminutive one who's extremely quick, who really has a good assist-to-turnover ratio, who really flourishes in an open game."

The team has also received encouraging signs from second-year player Jiri Welsch. Welsch had a dominant summer league in Los Angeles and can swing to the point when needed. The team also still has Bob Sura, who can play the point. However, despite the sugar coated statements by the team, the loss of Arenas is a major, major blow.

Rarely do point guards come along with the size and explosiveness of Arenas. Coach Eric Musselman knew this early into last season and begged St. Jean to start clearing cap then so that the Warriors could re-sign Arenas. St. Jean wasn't convinced that Arenas would get an offer for more than the mid-level exception, nor did he think he wanted to leave the West Coast.

The Wizards' six-year, $65 million deal should not only mean the end of the short Arenas era in Golden State but also signal the demise of St. Jean. Where there is no vision teams never prosper. It's tough to see the Warriors doing a repeat of last season without Arenas running the show. With so many teams in the West getting considerably better, someone inevitably has to get worse. That team looks like it could be Golden State.
