Here are a few Malick Badiane video clips I took while here in Long Beach. They are compressed used the DivX codec. You can download a DivX player/codec from www.divx.com if you don't have one. If it doesn't work for you, don't ask me, because as programmers say "It works on my machine"! :D

I had to brighten some of the videos and they were 15 fps videos that got compressed, so the quality was made even worse, but they're still viewable.

I'm not sure how long I'll keep these up, so download them onto your machines if you want to view them later!

If you're wondering about some of the numbers you may see out there:

    Juaquin Hawkins - 1
    Kyle Hill - 4
    Tito Maddox - 6
    Jason Miskiri - 7
    Bostjan Nachbar - 9
    Michael Hicks - 10
    Malick Badiane - 15
    Shea Seals - 16
    Demarco Johnson - 18
    Brent Wright - 19
    Shawnelle Scott - 24

Quick clip of Badiane shooting a technical :

Badiane grabs the rebound and lays it in :

Badiane grabs the rebound over his own man and puts it in :

Badiane with the 2003 Dreamshake turnaround fadeaway :

Another quick clip of Badiane's free throw form :

    Turnaround by Badiane :

I personally think this is the move he'll get called for traveling in an NBA game, but he does about 12 moves culminating in a jump hook :
    http://www.dunkshouse.com/spl2003/DSCN0710(1).avi

Badiane gets the ball in the post, passes back out, and Miskiri finds him on the drive for 2 :
    http://www.dunkshouse.com/spl2003/DSCN0711(1).avi

Badiane passes the ball cross-court to Miskiri who nails the jumper :

Badiane with a series of moves ending up in a missed shot, but gets the foul called on the defender :
    http://www.dunkshouse.com/spl2003/DSCN0760(1).avi

One of the highlights : Boki drives the baseline clearing the paint for Badiane to come down the middle and ram a dunk home :
    http://www.dunkshouse.com/spl2003/DSCN0784(1).avi

Malick misses the shot, but tries to show some moves off :
    http://www.dunkshouse.com/spl2003/DSCN0786(1).avi

Malick gets the loose ball, and with the clock running down pops an 18 footer :
    http://www.dunkshouse.com/spl2003/DSCN0790(1).avi

Malick gets fouled on this aggressive move to the basket :
    http://www.dunkshouse.com/spl2003/DSCN0791(1).avi

How about another shot of his free throw form?! :

Wow! All things considered he has some really nice basic fundamentals down that you don't see in alot of NBA players, things like keeping the ball high on inside rebounds, etc. Even in spite of your glowing reviews, these videos impress me.

Perhaps the Mutombo comparisons and the "awkwardly agressive" stuff was throwing me off, but these show me somebody who's much more graceful than Mutombo ever was. Given the background, work ethic, and the current state, I think the guy could be on the team this year using the "High School player" model, letting him develop in practice and sit on the bench. I think I'd rate him in terms of current ability ahead of recent Rockets second round and camp invitee big men, (Hamilton, Bell, Washington, Nowonko), and they were supposed to be much more developed products.

Of course this is about 10 seconds of highlights, so what do I know. It could have been followed by 191 minutes and 50 seconds of crap...

(BTW I get an encoding error on "784" but I could just have an old DiVX codec.)

(And he definately travels on "760")

My favorite Malick moment during the spl schedule was against the Raptors. Shawnelle Scott was alone under the basket when the Raptors missed a jumper. Malick came flying out of nowhere to go up with Scott for the rebound, and they both came down holding the ball. For about two seconds, they stood there, both holding on, until Scott looked in Badiane's eyes and seemed to think, "Man, this guy REALLY wants the damn rebound!" He let go and Malick kept the ball.

That's against his own friggin' teammate!

Thank you Dr of Dunk and heypartner.

Great to see him action. He shows some pretty sweet looking post up moves. He's very good at getting his defender out of position with his fakeout moves.

Whoa! That's the first time I've seen him in a game.

Looks good. Nice for at the ft line, decent range at 15ft, and I absolutely love his hustle on the boards.

The two things I look for in a rebounder is boxing out *as soon as the shot is released* by the other player; no standing around watching the ball hit the rim. Box out before that.

The other thing I look for is if they keep the ball above their head once they get the rebound, and then *hop* right up for the put back. Quick jumping with the ball above their head (don't bring it down to your hips like Cato/Yao does. You'll get it stripped). Malick already knows this technique. Not all players have that light foooted/quick hop also.

    I think we've found our P.J. Brown! A 10/10 guy someday :D

Other players that had this type of game that I loved were Donyell Marshall and Chris Gatling.

I don't think he traveled on this one or the 710 one.

He's keeping the same pivot foot down and moving only his other free foot. He only picks up his pivot at then end when going up for the shot.

Thanks for the vids Dr of Dunk! :D

    Thanks DoD.

I think you're right about traveling on that hook shot. That extra step would look OK for a layup but it looks like traveling on the hook. Plus he'd get no rookie calls.

If he jumped off of both feet at the same time it wouldn't be a travel, but because it's a 1-2 action (i.e. he pivots on his right foot, then picks it up and propells forward jumping finally off his left foot, I am 100% positive it is a by-the-rules travel.

    Here's what the rules say:

    http://www.nba.com/analysis/rules_10.html?nav=ArticleList

So according to the rules, he can pick up his pivot foot in the act of shooting.

Not to be an @ss, but I've just checked the infamous "784" with Virtual Dub and it tells me there's an avi index error, and AVIEdit tells me that everything after frame 7 is broken (it shows frames 7 to 218 as being black.

I feel confident in suggesting that you should check again to see if you can play the copy that you posted on the web. I don't think you'll be able to play it.
