Yep. It would be a great haul for us to jump in here and see if we can facilitate a trade for Grant. Somehow I think Pops was referring to the Clippers as "Pu$$yland" and he said Cat had his bags packed, but for which player? Maybe Odom. Odom won't stay in LAC with no players to surround him. And Riley does still need to beef up his roster. He would have Brand, Grant, and Eddie Jones signed to max deals and a bunch of 2nd-rounders and minimum salary players. Cat, Cato, and EG for Caron Butler and Brian Grant? Either keep Caron or trade him for re-signed and traded Lamar Odom (starting at about 8 a year)? [Hey, I'm bored at work. But the Clips are about to find themselves with no players and no one wanting to sign there.]
The Clippers always have $$$ to spend on free agents and yet, they never do. No way do the Clippers take on $140 million in long term commitments just to make the minimum payroll for next season, especially when they will be facing offer sheets with terms that force them to pony up large amounts of cash up front. Odom may end up staying for one year under the qualifying offer. May. If a team comes with a significant enough offer I bet he signs and the Clips wave goodbye to yet another player...as they always do.
the nba should test potential owners before they give them the power to keep a team down for a decade with their tight pocketbooks
That's a lot of money, but what is ironic is that Brand will make less money than co-ROY Steve Francis. I bet Brand rues the day he was traded from the Bulls to the Clips. If he had not been traded, he would have had a max deal in place last fall, just like Francis.
http://espn.go.com/nba/news/2003/0716/1581398.html Looks like Brand has officially signed with the Heat. Now we wait. I think this basically means Sterling has to choose which player he would rather keep, Brand or Odom, because I just don't see him paying max dollars for both.
Brand/Grant is some beef down low. Brand can probably hang as a center in the east with his shotblocking. As an aside, if the Clippers end up not matching- the Spurs just got punked this offseason. Denied by Kidd (and Zo) and O'Neal , paying Rasho twice what Kandi got, and just being blindsided by Brand, all the while the Lakers added to HOFers.
Absolutely! And with the Wolves getting Kandi with the MLE count the Mavs in the punked category as well!
Along with Eddie Jones for Cat, Mooch, Griffin and either Cato or Taylor. Either works with the salary cap, but they probably would rather have Cato because he's a legit center. Okay, I hate stupid trade posts too, but I couldn't help it. j
It's official: the Clippers have matched the offer. link (incl. new quotes from Elgin Baylor): http://espn.go.com/nba/news/2003/0718/1582499.html
hehe...so, for once I'm right about capology after a few wrongs in a row. Deuce, Achebe, NIKEstrad Notice the Clipper's matched nearly immediately. They did not wait more than a day. Take into consideration that it takes the league about 2 days to get the offer sheet's contract over to the ROFR team. So, Rickey Davis was matched immediately, and so was Brand. The Mark Jackson thing was just a pissing match by the owner. If you want to match, there is no incentive to wait...it just pisses off the player. The waits show up to be cases where the team doesn't match, so they would be a success by the offer team.
also note that your salary cap hit does not go into effect until the league OKs the contract. So Miami only had Brand's sheet hitting their cap for about 1 day.
If you want to match, there is no incentive to wait...it just pisses off the player. The waits show up to be cases where the team doesn't match, so they would be a success by the offer team. There absolutely is incentive to wait if it could affect other free agent negotiations - you tie up Miami from doing anything else. Let's say the early rumor that they would target Lamar Odom next is true. You essentially prevent them from doing that for 15 extra days if you wait, because they don't have the cap room until their offer sheet is matched. In that scenario, LA has 15 more days to negotiate with Odom, and Miami might start making alternative plans. Perhaps Odom gets nervous as teams start losing cap room and re-signs with LA to get his guaranteed money. Any leverage you have, you should use - like GS did with Golden State. I'm not sure why the Clippers didn't wait.
i totally do not agree....As far as I can research, no team has ever waited on matching except the weird, pissy-ant fight between Jackson and the owne, which was a dual weirdness because it was during camp. Your point is that teams look at it as screwing with others. I disagree. Teams look at it as another team setting the market, then they match it immediately. Most all waiting involves the team not wanting to match. So yes, if you are not going to match, then you are (almost by definition) looking for a replacement, and why not make another team wait. so, my point is that there is incentive to wait if you have *no* intention of matching, but when you fully intended to match and just wanted another team to set the market for you, then you sign immediately like Ricky Davis and Brand. To wait just pisses off the player who you are going to sign anyways. As a team with full bird rights over Brand, waiting serves you no purpose in cap space...because Brand already costs you 300% his previous salary against your cap. anyhow, Brand was matched immediately.
Think about what you just said. You said Miami might start looking at other scenarios while waiting on Brand. But you also said that making them wait prevented them from looking at other scenarios. that's contradictory, imo. LA can freely negotiate with all their Bird rights players. They have a price for each player. Brand's price is independent of Odom's. The market did not overprice Brand, so they signed him. I don't see how waiting on Brand helps you sign Odom...besides, this isn't about Odom anyhow. Brand signed an offer sheet, and if you intend to match, your best scenarios for Brand, Dunleavy and signing Odom is to sign Braand immediately, and don't fart aroundwith mind games...agents and player don't like that...you are not considering that dynamic at all. You are just treating them like Fantasy Trading cards, imo. If Sterling wants to keep Brand and Odom, it is in his best interest to just use offer sheets to set the market prices, but don't fart around with matching...Just like Ricky Davis.
