Of all places, I was buying fuzzy navel mix for wifey at RANDALL's and who do I see? He had on the Rockets new hat and was SUPER friendly! "It's great to see you in my neck of the woods" I said, he told me that it was his too because his academy was somewhere nearby (British something school...). Of course I ask about moves and was honest as to where I was going to post them, he was very candid and honest but knew no more than our speculation. Interestingly enough he did say that we "mortgaged the farm" a few years ago on some contracts but did not elaborate. I invited him out to my shows next weekend and he challenged me to be funny or else he would "boo my ass" I quickly reminded him of the ass whoopings I used to hand him at Carrington's on S. Main back in the day. Overall he was more pleasant than he had to be, and I felt that I squeezed as much information out of him as I was going to get. I know the "You shoulda asked him...." posts are forthcoming but I am only another man, another fan and another brother. Yall be cool now...ya hear.
Does he wear normal clothes when he's not doing a broadcast? I can't imagine Calvin in jeans and a t-shirt.
I'm glad he's such a great and friendly guy. I saw him on Bill Walton's Houston episode of Long Strange Journey or whatever his show is called, and he seemed like an ******* to Al, the assistant (not that I blame him, that fool is annoying). Just glad to hear that he's a great person, and that he'll take time out for the fans. I love Murph!
So you were buying mix drink stuff.....was he buying some brew also?.....In other words...Was the pimp getting his drink on? I wouldnt be suprised if you saw Bill Worrell in the liquor section..........hicup
I once saw Bill Worrell after a Rockets game in the medicine section at Krogers. I said hello, it's hard to watch a game without you and Calvin calling it. He coughed up a lung and said thanks.
Surprisingly, it's really easy to meet him and the other broadcasters if you want. After a Rockets loss to the Jazz about 5 or 6 years ago, I stayed on the floor area (having moved down when it was like a 15-point deficit in the 4th and the floor ushers didn't care anymore) and got Antoine Carr's autograph, then decided to walk over to where Bill Worrell was talking to other journalists and got into a little conversation with him. I met Calvin a few years later on the floor before the game when I went to meet Gene and Jim. Of course I made a fool of myself because I was so nervous. But still, great guy!
Cool, did you tell him he was your favorite and show him the rookie card of his taped to your speedometer? Good to hear your playing in town. What is the schedule, I may try to make it out there and say hi again?
Man, Calvin Murphy is one of the nicest and outgoing guys you can meet. He and Bill Worrel talk to each other like they do during the broadcasts. Really funny guy.
I took my 2 boys, 5 & 6 years old, to the 100 days to lift off party last month and we all met Calvin. He was very cool. While getting the introductions down in the begining for the news cast he stopped and brought us to the front to ask my son for his Steve Francis #3 cap. Not going to happen . Not even for Calvin.
he lives close to me. he's very friendly. and he doesnt wear those suits all the time - mostly tshirts and shorts/sweat pants
Calvin did some TV and radio spots I worked on within the last two years. The guy is really a helluva nice guy. But I would say he is a bit bitter about the NBA today. He sees these young guys making 10X what he was making and don't have an ounce of passion he once had when he played. He was telling me some things I can't say on here, but I found it really interesting. He's nice, but has a chip on his shoulder.
