whats hilarious about this entire thread is that Steve is not even a point guard. Hes a shooting guard. Its like asking if Mobley is one of the top point guards in the league.

    kobe
    tmac
    pierce
    steve?

Wether its about pgs or sgs, steve is not #1.

    kidd
    marbury
    arenas
    then steve.
maybe even parker ahead of steve
Im not a hater, just the truth sayer.

There is no way that Parker can even be considered ahead of SF in anything. He's way too overrated. And plus, SF plays the PG on this team, so that's why he's considered our point.

I agree. He is too overrated. He even said that Stephon is more of a challenge than kidd.I so disagreed on that comment he made.

Okay, there are several ways to look at this question, IMO. Who is the best player playing the position of point guard, who does the most for his team while playing point guard, and who is the best at fulfilling the traditional role od point guard.

I think you can argue any of Payton, Kidd, Steve, Marbury, or possbily Davis for the first...Kidd, Payton, Nash, Marbury or possbily Steve for the second, and Kidd, Nash, and possibly still Stockton for the third.

So in order to answer the question we need to redefine it. I personally think that number 2 is the most telling. I think that Kidd and Payton consistently make the biggest differences to their team. Now if we're talking future, Kidd has leveled off, Payton is on the decline, Marbury has may still be improving, Nash probably won't get any better, while you can argue that Davis and Steve might still improve, or might never get beyond theri previously demonstrated limitations.

The best and greatest hope for Steve is this: He has no real physical limitations other than small hands, and his strengths tend to exceed others. But making a difference, as Stockton spent a career demonstrating, has as much or more to do with what you've got above the shoulders as below it, and that is precisely where Steve's weakness lies. Now the same was once said of Starbury, and he has overcome it...but even amidst his years of being selfish, his 'point guard' numbers were always better than Steve's; he had more assists and fewer turnovers. But I still think that Marbury is the best hope we as Houston fans can look to...

All told, if you give me one for one game right now, i take Payton. For one season, I take Kidd. For one contract ( ie three or four years), I take Marbury. But for the future, period, I take Steve and cross my fingers. You could really argue Marbury for this too...

No, it's not like asking if Mobley is one of the top PG's in the league. You know why? Because Francis actually plays PG and Mobley plays 2 guard. How can you say that Steve is a shooting guard when he doesn't play shooting guard? See, in case you didn't know, let me show you how the lineup went:

PG- Steve Francis (see, he's the point guard.)
SG- Cuttino Mobley (that means he's the shooting guard)
    SF- James Posey
    PF- Eddie Griffin
    C- Yao Ming

As we can tell by your name, you're obviously biased, but please, try and at least make sense here.

I don't see what is the problem with that quote. Parker was just saying that Stephon is a real pain in the arse to guard. Think about it, Stephon is thick and muscular and constantly attacks the basket. Kidd runs the break and looks for open men. Who would you rather guard?

Parker is quick, he can guard fast players, but he has trouble guarding physical guys. (and he shuts down Francis almost every time).

If we go by purely PG skills, Steve is WAY down the list. Below Bibby, Parker, Tinsley, Andre Miller. Once he improves his fast break and P&R skills, things will be different.

YoYao...I just wanted to say that, seriously, you have been a great sport about this. The pic did weird me out a bit, but you have taken a LOT of guff for it, and usually you have taken it very well. I have a lot of respect for the fact that you have handled all the joking with a certain amount of class.

YoYao sorry I missed your movie. And did you find it?

Steve is one of those few players that is a freak in his position. Magic, KG, Durk, and Dream did it just to name a few. No other player Steves size can jump like he. Few at his position get rebounds like Steve. Few are as strong. Not many run with the motor as high. Steve is a newbreed type point where they are relied on to score. His athletisim and COMPLETE game is what seperates him. Yes he needs to improve his TO ratio, but thats really it. Points used to be only assist men, but that has changed. If Yao is such a great passer and we want him to run the offense then we don't need a 10 assist per game pg. We need one who can score. Stop complaining

While Steve is top five on one end of the floor among PGs, he is bottom five on the other end. No, he is not the best point guard. Unless he can learn to defend well enough to stop a blindfolded half-court-shot contestant, he never will be.
