How is Kenny wrong? The variables changed, so the stats will change either negative or positive.. In this case it was positive.. People think that the old school players and coaches are against analytics and their not... All Barkley is saying is that you can't put together an entire team based upon analytics and expect to win a championship. T_Man
<blockquote class="twitter-tweet" lang="en"><p>His overall point -- that talent trumps analytics -- is just taking down a straw man. Everyone knows you need great players above all else.</p>— Zach Lowe (@ZachLowe_NBA) <a href="https://twitter.com/ZachLowe_NBA/status/565513791614767104">February 11, 2015</a></blockquote> <script async src="//platform.twitter.com/widgets.js" charset="utf-8"></script>
Probably a good summation of Barkley's position. But when has any team ever even come close to trying that? Smells of an extreme strawman argument to me. EDIT: Ironically I chose to use the word "strawman" at the exact moment the above Lowe tweet was being posted.
I just don't see the point in getting into a pissing match with a TV personality. Its not going to make him back off in his negative comments towards us.
more ignorant than anything Skip Bayless has ever said, and this is coming off someone who absolutely loathes Skip Bayless and admires Barkley but Charles took it to another level last night and what an embaressment for NBA on TNT. I hope people soon start to realize what a complete joke that program has gotten over the years, esepcially ever since Shaq's arrival. And look at Kenny Smith, what a disgrace.
I don't characterize Morey's one tweet (in response to a factually incorrect statement by Barkley) as "getting into a pissing match". As per usual, Barkley's comments and the subsequent media over-coverage has led to this becoming a "thing", and now Morey's entire approach is being questioned by other coaches/analysts today as if Morey was up all night banging the drum for analytics (which he wasn't).
The Rockets have been worse on defense recently. Worse without Dwight, and worse with injured Dwight. Put a healthy Dwight back into the lineup and the defense will be good again.
Do you know who was the godfather of baseball analytics? It wasn't Billie Bean, it was Bill James You know the only mlb team Bill James has ever worked for? the Boston Red Sox You know who has won the most world series in the last 10 years? the Giants and Red Sox, 3 titles You know who won their first title in 86 years the year after hiring Bill James?
Same. I hope DM keeps taking shots as well. His act against the rockets has gotten old a long time ago.
But unfortunately Morey is and has been doing that.... Just look at the offense... It's built around driving and shooting the 3.. No mid game... Yeah this will work to win games, but very hard to do to win championships... Now look at the players, you have Bev and Trevor who are great on defense but they are not guys you want shooting the 3 all the time... The problem is there is no mid-game... So yeah just on that small sample size Morey is basing everything on analytics.. T_Man
As comedians always say...arguing with a guy who has the mike is just plain dumb...They have the power to reach a larger audience. Barkley has the microphone and he has a national audience...There is only one way to get his a$$ off the stage...GO GET A RING! Hoping that this may galvanize the team.
1. Chuck is an idiot but we all know that. The guy has a lot of jealousy and hate in him. He has wanted a GM job for years but owners see that he is too dumb for such a role. Chuck is butthurt. 2. While talent is needed, analytics is there to make the best use of talent and in some cases like Harden project what that player can be. No one besides Morey probably saw a true MVP player in Harden despite him being 6th man at OKC. 3. Morey needs to lay off the twitter at times. I know he likes social media and loves to defend the Rockets etc but it can be a detriment.
Noone is questioning Morey's approach with analytics. Every serious team and all the contenders use them.(except Memphis and GSW last year) The only who would call analytics crap are guys like Marc Jackson who are terrible coaches themselves.
And the team that uses analytics most is San Antonio so there. Of course, it doesn't hurt to have Popovich coaching your team either. And yes, he's definitely old school and I can agree with him about talent being the final arbitrator in winning a championship - which, unless I'm mistaken, is supposed to be the objective for Dork Elvis and Milkhair. In the end, who cares what Barkley or Shaq or ANYONE on TV has to say? The only thing that counts is what this team does in the playoffs, PERIOD. In the meantime, everyone should just sit back, take a chill pill and enjoy the Dwight Howard fashion show.
By the way... Is TNT seriously putting Charles Barkley on a panel to discuss analytics? What in the f***. Is this before or after they consult Kim Kardashian on string theory?
