Now if this team gets Arenas or Miller, this team has a decent chance at a good record.... http://espn.go.com/nba/news/2003/0711/1579608.html Clippers have opportunity to match $42 million offer -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- ESPN.com news services Los Angeles Clippers restricted free agent Corey Maggette will accept a six-year, $42 million offer sheet from the Denver Nuggets, two league sources told ESPN's NBA Insider Chad Ford. The Clippers, however, will have 15 days to match the offer once Maggette signs the offer sheet next Wednesday, the first day NBA teams can begin signing free agents. The 6-6 Maggette is coming off the best of his four NBA seasons, having averaged 16.8 points and 5.0 rebounds while starting a career-high 57 games for the Clippers. For his career, Maggette is averaging 11.5 points and 4.2 rebounds. The Nuggets tied Cleveland for the league's worst record last season at 17-65, but have plenty of room under the salary cap in which to entice players. The Nuggets are also said to be focusing on a point guard, targeting either Golden State's Gilbert Arenas or Maggette's Clippers teammate Andre Miller. Nuggets general manager Kiki Vandeweghe even suggested the team might be looking to acquire both players. "I think that they're both great players," Vandeweghe told the Rocky Mountain News. "I think they could play together." The newspaper stated that Arenas wants a salary starting at $9 million a year, with Miller between $6-$7 million. With $18 million to spend on free agents, the Nuggets could definitely afford Maggette and one of the guards. Like Maggette, Arenas and Miller are restricted free agents, with their current teams having the option to match. The Warriors may only have $4.6 million to re-sign Arenas, which might produce a quicker decision than the 15-day waiting period. "It weighs in because if you make an offer on a player, you could be tied up for two weeks and you could lose out on other players," Vandeweghe told the newspaper.
Clippers won't match! Arenas wants more than Andre?!? Well I'd get Arenas anyways. Posey shouldn't get more than 7 million.
That offer is VERY low. Reportedly, it's not been made either. Maggette is our #1 target, but I think that this is made up to feel out the Clips to find out what they'll offer. You want to give Posey $7 mil a year?!? That would be a Cato-esque mistake!
It was reported that the report by ESPN was wrong and that Maggette has not signed an offer sheet with Denver.
What a big waste of cap room this would be for Denver. I'm sorry, but Maggette will always be about potential rather than actual production. To pay him $7 mil would be a mistake right up there with picking Nickoloz over Caron Butler last year. Or to put it in Rocket-fan terms, right up there with the obscene contracts handed out to Rice, Cato, Taylor, and Moochie.
You must not have seen him play this past season. Maggette was the Clipps second best player. He produced, he defended, and he's still young.
Maggette for 6 mil a year is a steal. The Clips would match I am almost sure. I'd take Maggette over Odom. Maggette is a notch above Posey or say S. Jackson (not to mention much younger), just because he gets 6-7 mil does not mean those other guys will--those other guys won't.
It's 7 mil a year, Scar. I don't know. The guy hasn't shown much, IMO. Salaries in the NBA are really getting crazy.
7 seems about right to me, now PJ Brown getting 9 If JPo and S Jackson are worth 4.5-5.5 mil per year, Maggette is worth 7--he is significantly younger and better than those guys. Maggette IMO is the 2nd best Clip--better than Odom or Dre, who will probably also get 7 mil or more also.
I think if this is real (reports say it isn't), it'll be interesting to see if the Clips match- ESPECIALLY now that they have a coach, who presumably has some assurances they'll keep some of these RFAs. As for Maggette...the guy hasn't yet turned 24. He's a well above average defender, and is getting better- his points, FT%, 3P%, and assists have gone up every year in the league. This would seem around the going rate for a 23 year old wing coming off a 17-5 season plus good defense. He's got all the physical tools in the world for a wing. He seems to have his head screwed on right, which is probably the reason why there's a lot more interest in him than Odom. IMO, he and Jaric were the only real bright spots for the Clippers this past year. Miller and Odom were pretty dissapointing, and Brand was Brand with a few more injuries than usual. Personally, Odom's overall potential plus his ability to compensate for Francis' shortcomings have me drooling over the possibilities of him on the Rockets. But for most teams, Maggette is practically a 23 year old "sure thing", and more likely to fulfill his promise. Nuggets are building well. If they land Maggette, and Arenas or Miller for the backcourt, combined with a frontcourt of Carmelo, Tsika, and Nene, they'll be very young, but loaded with potential.
Does this push Odom to 8 mil per? Clips can sign both Brand and Odom is they let Kandi, Miller, Maggette walk. Offseason done. Sure hope Brand or Odom come out and state they will not resign - demand S&T. Otherwise, we're screwed getting them.
