Definitely go to Ippudo. I miss NY, really wish I could actually live there.

The wife and I just got back from NYC today and wanted to thank everyone again for the recommendations.

Once was great, my wife loved it and it was awesome to stand on a Broadway stage and grab a drink from the bar on stage. Afterward we went to 46th and ate at Lattanzi, great Italian food. We had pizza at John's on 44th, the interior was pretty cool and the brick-oven pizza was excellent.

We caught a movie at AMC Empire, walked around Times Square, Bryant Park, Rockefeller Center, Radio City Music Hall, the Rock, 86th floor of the Empire State Building, Ed Sullivan Theatre, Wall Street, FAO Schwartz, Apple Store at Central Park, walked through Central Park, MoMA, the Guggenheim, Statue of Liberty, Ellis Island, Battery Park, UN Building, 9/11 Memorial, etc.

Saw a ton in the five days we were there. The best meal we had was brunch at Norma's at the Le Parker Meridien on 56th. We split the potato pancakes, banana pancakes and the breakfast pizza. Phenomenal food, excellent atmosphere.

The NYC experience was awesome for lack of a better term. If you ever thought about going, I highly recommend it. Again thanks to everyone for the recommendations.

Fantastic! Sounds like the trip was a wonderful time. Glad the two of you enjoyed Once as much as we did, along with the rest of the things you were able to do on what was a pretty short trip. New York is amazing. Amazing and romantic. We've always thought so. :)-

Glad to hear you and your wife had a great time! My family and I have been there a half dozen times, and it never gets old! Like Deckard said, 5days is pretty short for NY, but it seems like you had a good game plan and were able to see quite a few attractions, so Kudos on your planning! Christmas in NY is a must, not only is the city a little more vibrant, but there's also a good chance of having a "White Christmas", which is something that's extremely rare in Htown. (something to think about for next time)...;)

    Bump

Going to NYC in 2 weeks for my first time. I haven't booked a room because I thought me and my gf will be able to stay with family up there but now I'm not so sure.

Any good recommendations that don't break the bank? Going Jan 10-13.

Also what are some must things to do for my first time?

    Thanks.

I would recommend staying in Manhattan. Its a little pricey ~$300 for a not so great hotel, but having to go back to Brooklyn or some other parts of the city at 2 in the morning is not that fun.

Four Points by Sheraton in Long Island City (LIC is actually in Queens, not Long Island) is a really good deal. It's close to the subway and you'll be in midtown Manhattan in just a stop or two.

You can see for yourself on the map just how close it is to Manhattan.

When are you going? I'll be there 1/8-1/13 for the Rockets/Knicks and Rockets/Nets games, will be staying with my cousin in Astoria/Queens

EDIT: n/m didn't see the dates, going to make it to the Nets/Rockets game? Flying through Southwest? would be funny if we are on the same flight back

I'm hoping I can make the nets game if I can get cheap seats. Saw I missed the Knicks by a few days.

Leaving the 13th around noon from La Guardia.

The burbs of Newark are nice with convenient access to train service into Manhattan.

that may be but the commute back in forth after being in the city the entire day with a 2 year old was exhausting and put a bit of a damper on the fun.

So I'll be staying at The Manhattan in Times Square. I plan on doing all the touristy stuff: Statue of Liberty, Empire State building, time square, Central Park, Lion King on Broadway, etc.

Any good recommendation on where to eat some good pizza, hot dogs?

I plan on doing the NY City Pass. Anyone done this before? Worth it?

The Nonna Maria or "Grandma" slice from Bleecker Street pizza is my favorite in the whole city.

Service was great but the pizza was so-so. too dried for my taste.

I recommend looking into staying at the Vanderbilt YMCA for those who are budget conscious and want to stay in the city (meaning Manhattan). It is not really a full hotel, but the facility is clean, at a great location, and you've to use the gym which includes pools and basketball court.
