I checked out the Granville Island Public Market and was pretty impressed. I also liked the one in North Vancouver, at the Ferry Terminal. It's smaller than the Granville one but also more intimate and the vendors seemed friendlier.
Vancouver is a beautiful city and has a very diverse geography. On the downside, the sun does not appear to be a fan.... and lots of drugs and organized crime, lots of homeless people as well. Still well worth a visit.
The amount of homeless that I saw didn't appear any worse than SF, LA or SD. I got hit up for change but not nearly as much I do in CA.
I agree with you and to a point it gives the area character if you are just visiting. There are many homeless people in San Francisco. In my experience the homeless in Vancouver tended to be younger. Some are worse than others...
I'm just going to leave this here. Crack Shack or Million Dollar Vancouver home? And then there is this. Vancouver vs Beverly Hills And finally this one:9 awesome French castles for the price of 1(!) Vancouver tear-down I just visited Vancouver recently in November. It is a nice city, I don't just don't think it is worth how expensive it is. Granted, I only spent a day there, but for those prices I'd like free BJs from beautiful women daily.
it's a summer city, you won't see a cloud in the summer, but it never gets too hot that you have to use air conditioning. Winter is miserable as hell though, you get used to it after a while, I prefer mild rain to -20 in Toronto.
As long as HK money goes there it will be expensive.. Drugs and organized crime would be worse if Canadian police was as oppressive and misallocated as US Cops And they have progressive solutions to deal with the hard drug usage, such as Insite, the supervised heroin injection facility w clean needles. Addicts gonna inject.. what can you do except make it safer and reduce usage over time. rather than fight the issue
Yo Bro... do tell me the wonders of Canada, but first pass me the blunt so I too can partake in this liberal fantasy that you speak of.
Vancouver is beautiful during the summer. I remember lots of sun when I visited relatives there. The homeless problem... sounds like you visited near chinatown. There are a lot of homeless around that area. Lots of hot women and probably the best city in North America for Asian cuisine. My main gripe with Vancouver (if I were to live there) was how ridiculously expensive the real estate was, and how many spoiled brats there were. A lot of kids there driving bmws and benzes off of mommy and daddy's money from overseas. I grew up in Brooklyn. I would prefer a more working class type of setting for my kids so they grow up normal and have good values.
It's interesting to hang out with the BC locals up north of Vancouver, up toward the inner passage, around the Fraser River, etc.... They have a much different view of the city than most tourists do.
