    Rockets' R gains brand recognition

If the Rockets wanted their new twin-tailed, flying R logo to create some buzz for the team's debut season in the downtown arena, they've got their wish.

Fans spent a second day Wednesday dissecting and analyzing the new logo from every angle, searching for comparisons to trademarks and symbols in other media and even speculating whether it had a vaguely Oriental caste in an effort to appeal to center Yao Ming.

The most popular theories regarding the logo's inspiration ran the gamut from goth to high-tech.

At the former extreme were those who suggested the new symbol bears a gory resemblance to something they would expect to see on the recently departed television show Buffy the Vampire Slayer. If you squint properly, you see, the vapor trails at the end of the R could resemble the aftermath of a vampire attack.

Adding to this school of thought is the fact that Eiko Ishioka, who designed the icon, also won an Academy Award for her costumes for Bram Stoker's Dracula.

At the other extreme were the hard-core Internet gamers who suggest the logo bears a strong resemblance to the trademark of Quake, a game produced by id Software of Mesquite. Quake's logo also includes a vertical line bisected by a circle.

Todd Hollenshead, the company's president, acknowledged the similarity.

"I hadn't seen it before now, being a Mavs fan and all, but it does kinda (resemble the Quake logo)," he said in an e-mail message.

Meanwhile, opinions on the new logo are divided but plentiful. With more than 15,000 votes cast in a poll at the Rockets' web site, 37 percent of respondents described the icon as "pretty cool" while 27 percent asked, "What were you thinking?"

At the Chronicle's web site, www.chron.com, 20,996 votes were cast by 10 p.m. Wednesday. Twenty-seven percent said the logo "looks great," 32 percent opted for "not bad" and 41 percent chose, "It's a joke, right?"

I hope the Houston Press doesn't find out Barron is getting all of his ideas from cc.net. :)

Exactly! When those newspaper hacks want real news, they come here. You can't stop the BBS, you can only hope to contain it!

BTW, the thread title is a bit misleading. I thought we traded for Elton Brand. :)

Yetti isn't / wasn't an International Basketball Coach! Yetti was an International Track and Field Coach.

A big foot should never refer to himself in the third person.

I'm all over that! I mean he really used the word BRAND in his title! He must know something... :D

but seriously, I noticed it, and in turn gave it three thoughts before dismissing it.

Hmmm...if you put the letter "o" between the "R" and "gains" in the headline, you get something that David Barron apparently needs.
