Good job Tim... Thanks for staying with basic universal colors like Red/Silver and White/Black. Universal in terms of just not Texas, but Internationally. Good bye to fringe colors like Orange, Mustard, Baby Blue, and Rainbow Bright. They just don't mix well. The logo seems to retain both silhouette and design flexibility. For example, you can put the silhouette (solid color) on caps and it can be recognizable from a far, even though you may not be able to "read" the letters of the logo. It doesn't matter. It's easily recognizable. Similar to: Yanks, Red, and Astros logos. Simple, but recognizable. Textured logos can also be done, not just solid colors, as Rocketeer's textural designs can attest to that!!! Depth, texture, and shadows can be added to create a new type of logo for posters, bumper stickers, and media guides. These are things that people will look at very closely (like reading a Rocket Program). That's when detail and texture, depth come into play. When you think back to the old logo, you didn't have this flexibly. It was too busy (cluttered). They seemed to be "trying too hard" to be "space age" or "modern." The new logo is subtle, yet modern. They are NOT "in your face." Good job! And we haven't even brought up OLD unis! Lets not go there!
yeah sup big zach comin out of h town represent motha im cap who ever say this thing sucks but i aint putin my thoughts till i see the jersey but i dont think it will ever look as tight as da all rockets symbol wit the yellow and red peace homie im out
Bobblehead, you poor guy, I'll give you what you asked for... I don't think you can beat this! ... Sorry!
I'm like most fans on this board: at first I HATED the new logo but after seeing Rocketeer's rendering I realized it has some potential. Also, Tim saying that this is just the "flat" version of the logo is pretty reassuring. Here's my rendering of the logo. By chopping off the exhaust flames, changing the color of the ring to a contrasting color, and adding a basketball in the background - I think we've got a pretty darn good logo ! I know we're not planning on having navy blue any more but I added some in the first version anyway.
Kinda reminds me of the older ones. More technical, but busy. Not sure we want to go backwards. They are not "ugly" per say. Just too busy.
Excellent explanation. Better than the ones I've given, in fact. Flexibility is key in logo design. Essentially, our old one had none. That's one of the reasons it was so difficult to make into a hat, for example. Getting too busy with color also limits flexibility, which is why we kept it simple. CRC and Bobblehead ... it's way too late to make me spit my Dr. Pepper on my screen. 13 minutes and 14 minutes ... you travel around the planet faster than Santa Claus. Sure, they aren't real, but send me your e-mails; I'll think of something to send you. Tim McDougall Vice President of Marketing Houston Rockets and Comets timm@rocketball.com
Tim if you're lookin for something "outter space like" I live in Roswell, NM. I could get ya all kinds of Space, UFO, and Rockets stuff. It is The home of Robert H Goddard The inventor of Rockets. just a thought.
man, what a great post...that guy is a genious.. anyways, of greater pressing importance, will the logo/uniform and new arena for that matter be part of NBA Live 2004.. I know they have a cutoff for rosters etc.. will all the new stuff be on the game?? shed some light down on the situation.. davesavage raised--c-lake, tx based--springfield, mo ******************* forward all comments to my publicist
Actually, no. League rules say you can't have an alternate jersey the same year you introduce new ones.
Tim said it, as did DavidS... logos are supposed to be simple, not busy. Market recognition comes with time... look at logos like or or even and the notorious some of these have been around for 100 yrs... some less, but most great logos have no more than 2 main colors. I think this is an awesome example of good graphic design. Simple. Clever. Champion-esque. -------it also reminds me of....
Tim, I think it would be really wise if a minor change was made to the logo and it just had some shading the way Rocketeer's rendering did. I've seen it where the shading makes the "h" stand out clearer and it shading just makes it look better overall. Then I'll stop bashing the logo* *Maybe, as long as the uniforms are awesome!
If the road unis say HOUSTON,then the H might look like this but in silver since the uni is red btw I like it better this way than the R. If they put this on the shirts or hat,Im getting it. But I think the R is too tall and looks like a "B".
